"Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem."

Study and research is serves to better people’s life.
Should people who conducted research concern more about their own interest while working as this statement suggests? In response to this issue, it is necessary for people to analyze the proposition systematically and comprehensively. To a certain extent, I agree insofar as interest can be a thruster that pull scholars out they are stepping into their trough time as well as a nuclear reactor that give them energy when facing obstacle. However, a far more compelling argument can be made that if research is simply for researcher’s own sake of interest instead of
aim at contributing to feedback the society, it will be like putting the cart before the horse. In my point of view, laying particular stress on either part will be critical and an all-sided consideration is needed when researchers deciding precedence.
Admittedly, scholars and researchers’ purpose of conducting a research is rooted not only in making contribution to the society for its developing but rather satisfy their own interest and target. And also sometimes it is an important movement for them to keep enthusiastic and focus on their job, which sometimes it might be boring and exhausting.
However, although enthusiastic sometimes might be vital for scientists to carry on when in front of challenges, if interest becomes the central of science research instead of pursuing contribution to the whole society, it would become a viable craft, but at the same time cease to be science, whether at science level, person level or global level.
At the science level, without making any contribution to the whole society
great chances are that the support provided to you may decrease day by day, year by year. At the same time while changing it into a personally interest relevant stuff, the value of science may be minimized.
At the personal level, without making any contribution to the whole society, researchers are not able to gain any glory or respect, fame or money, applause or flower. Consequently, he is not able to reach his personal value.
Finally, at the global level, without making any contribution to the whole society, money and resource are waste, talents are squandered, efforts are in vain. Development cannot be brought and people’s life cannot be improved. At this moment, science lost its primal meaning to be science. Moreover, when people do research purely for its own sake, it might amount to risk squandering and deploying public resources to fight a losing battle which could have gone a long way toward addressing the pressing social problems such as rampant violence, AIDS epidemic, hunger and so forth which keep agonizing the society every day.
From the analysis made above, I commit to the optimal approach that we need to seek a balance and take an all-sided consideration. Without gaining movement by satisfying interest’s demand, research may hard to be continued. Without making contributions to feedback the society, research may lose its bounden duty as something that born to better human’s life. In a word, this complicated issue whether should scholars and researchers should be concerned more with their contribution to the larger society or their own interest hinges on researchers’ ability to find and hold the time and energy balance between interest and contribution pursuing, and it would be the best if he can combine his interest with his job.
