1. 1. Thefollowing appeared in a memorandum written by the vice president of Nature'sWay, a chain of stores selling health food and other health-related products.
"Previousexperience has shown that our stores are most profitable in areas whereresidents are highly concerned with leading healthy lives. We should thereforebuild our next new store in Plainsville, which has many such residents.Plainsville merchants report that sales of running shoes and exercise clothingare at all-time highs. The local health club, which nearly closed five yearsago due to lack of business, has more members than ever, and the weighttraining and aerobics classes are always full. We can even anticipate a newgeneration of customers: Plainsville's schoolchildren are required to participatein a 'fitness for life' program, which emphasizes the benefits of regularexercise at an early age."
In this argument, the author concludes that they should open their next new store in Plainsville. To justify this conclusion, the author shows the report about sales of running shoes and exercise clothing, the member of local health club, as well as schoolchildren there are required to participate in a exercise program. However, as far as I'm concerned, i think this argument is logically flawed inseveral aspects.
First and foremost, the arguer doesn't point out the criterion of judging whether peoplelead to healthy lives. He unfairly assumes that good sales of running shoes and exercise clothes represent people there concerning their health. But he fails to provide any evidences to support this assumption. Perhaps, people there are loving sports and actually they are quite healthy. Therefore, they will not put too more attention on their health, and they will not buy the production. Or perhaps, running shoes and exercise clothes are cheaper and better there than any other districts, and people in other district would like to buy them in Plainsville. Unless the author provides further evidence to exclude all these concerns, it is unreasonable to draw the conclusion.
Secondly, thenumber of members in the health club doesn't mean people will buy yourproduction. Perhaps, the club, which nearly closed, has changed its mode of management, lows its price, provide better service and advertises for their classes.Without better evidence, the arguer cannot draw his conclusion.
What's more, thereis another assumption that the situation of the most profitable areas is thesame as that of Plainsivlle. However, the author provides no evidence to support it. Maybe, there are many stores like the arguer's in Plainsivlle. And a serious competition between them lasts many years. Thus, you will not profit there, or even suffer a deficit . Or perhaps, people there like their local healthy products too much to change for other products.
In sum, thisargument fails to substantiate the conclusion that new stores should be openedin Plainsivlle, because the evidence cited in the analysis do not lend strong support to what the arguer maintains. To bolster this conclusion, i would need to know that people in Plainsville are highly concerned with leading healthylives. Additionally, the arguer would have to show that the situation in Plainsivlle is as same as other profitable areas. Therefore, if the argumenthad included the given factors discussed above, it would be more logically acceptable.
