There is a heated debate that whether scholars and researches should be concerned with their work by making a contribution to larger society or by pursuing their own interests. Admittedly, interests can drive ones mind to well serve in most scientific researches. However, without sufficient knowledge for this special field, how can an interest obtain its value? Thus, as respect to me, interests to a scholar or a research is necessary., yet researchers’ contribution to our society will ultimately contribute to the prosperity and development of our society.

It is hard for us to predict whether the researches can make a contribution to the larger society. Some researches which may solve the urgent, problem such as energy problem, environment problem, can be paid a great attention to the public. However, there are some researches and scholars may have latent value or some unexpected contribution to our society in some years later. As we all know, Einstein, the famous physician, creates the theory of relatively which seems ridiculous at that time and even no one can completely understand it. Thus his theory is never emphasized by the public. However, today although his theory is still hard to understand, but the grand work is widely spread among the world. What’s more, it is the fundamental of the physics which can never be replaced. Thus, it is not so significant that whether their work can make a contribution to the larger society since we cannot precisely to predict the influence of the work in the future.

Individual interests can not only motivate ones desire and curiosity to concentrate on a special thing, but also can stimulate the spiritual of creation and resistance to certain thing. Without an interesting on this field, he will never have passion on doing a research, or even he coerce himself doing this research , it can hardly get a achievement. On the contrary, a researcher with highly interest on something will overcome no matter how difficult it is and just confront to it. When people longed for a tool to prevent themselves from exposing to the rain, Luban, with great interests on it, invented umbrella; when people looked for a special thing running faster than horses, a new thing called automobile come out by the German engineer Cull, who has great interests and passion on it; when people expected to visit friends far from them, the Internet help us realize our dream. It is obvious that the curiosity and the interests of an individual lead them to concentrate on certain thing and it seems easy to approach to the success. Just take Darwin for example, he was sent to university to study theology when he was young, but this sagacious boy only concentrating on Botany and Geology. With his longtime efforts and interest, eventually, he become a famous biologist and published “Origin of Species” widespread in the world. Without the crazy about his interest, how would Darwin make such a great achievement?

I should admit that it is benefit to advocate people pursuing their interests bravely. However, keeping pace with the society in necessary and some interests which is detrimental to our society should be restricted. Thus, maximize the benefit to the need of this society would be sensible. As we all know, a successful scientific research must be supported by government, like investing, establishing special institution of fund. So our government acts as a guidance to lead them to a way benefit to our society. Or otherwise, there would be no doubt it is a waste of money which come from taxpayer, as well as wasting time of themselves.

To sum up, we should pay much attention to the researchers who pursue their individual interests, since their creation, curiosity, and resolution about their interests may make some unexpected work benefit to our society. But we should admit that we should restrict to interests far away with the pace of the modern society.
