I do not think I responded - I was dealing w an intense cancer issue. I still am but things are better. I hope you applied to our department. I no longer take students and have to limit what I do in order to stay connected, but I am sure you will do good things w your training in biopharmacy and the use of statistical analytical tools. I think you meant to apply to the bioinformatics program, for which like any UCSD grad program no individual faculty have any role. One applies to a department and if one gets in, after review by a revolving committee of faculty and on which I no longer serve, then one takes courses and rotates through labs and a mutual choice is made between faculty member and student as to the best fit. The UCSD bioinformatics program is very competitive but it would help you having so much experience. Phil Bourne and to a lesser extent Ruben Abagyan and a few others in the pharmacology dept and pharmacy school do think about biopharmaceutical science, doing so from a very molecular and structural perspective. Their work is superb. In any case, there are many faculty research programs here that would provide useful experience for you. However, if you didn't apply already, it is too late for this year. I regret that my health issues have taken on such proportion over the past 2 years. I am going to retire but let me at least say I appreciate your thoughts on building from actual experimental data to analysis and predictions - this is the future for all of biology and pharmacological research certainly represents one of the deep challenges. Best wishes.
