In the listening material, the lecturer insists the memoir written by Chevalier was honest with the historic facts. She also provides evidence to refuse what the reading says.

Firstly, the reading believes the Chevalier was a poor man in Switzerland because he often borrowed money from a Swiss merchant. However, the lecturer explains that the Chevalier did possess huge assets that needed to sell for money. So he had to money to maintain numerous gambling games and parties until his own property was converted to money.

Secondly, the reading claims it impossible to remind the conversation between the Chevalier and Voltaire accurately since the memoir finished long after that event. This differs from the listening after the lecturer divulges the fact that the Chevalier wrote everything down immediately after the conversation and fortunately he kept these notes for a long time. When writing the memoir, he would refer to those notes. So no doubt these phrases record the true conversations.

Lastly, the reading and the listening have difference in the way the Chevalier elude the jail penalty. Although he made acquaintances with lots of politically powerful friends, this can not help him at all. According the lecturer, at that time many of his prison mates have even more powerful friends than the Chevalier but they were still in the cell. In addition, the government file approved the Chevalier escaped the Venetian prison buy making a hole in the ceiling because the ceiling was repaired after that prison break event.
