Do you agree or disagreewith the following statement? Does advice given by older people more valuablethan from people at your age?
Given the limited resources and imperfectinformation-processing system of humanbrain, no one could solve all the problems s/he faces. Therefore we should takesuggestions from other. However, there is a debate in this situation. Somepeople argue that the advices from older people are more valuable. However, based on my experience, I believe that the advices from different people willbe most valuable only under certain circumstances.
First of all, I prefer to turn to my peersfor help when I want to know what happen recently and what is the mostpopular thingsthe most popular things are currently.Obviously, people at my age are more open to new things and have better skillsto get the latest information and trends around the world. For instance, Ialways ask one of my best friends, who is at my age, about what kind of musicto listen to, because he is a big musical fan and track the newest songs. Andhe will recommend me the most classic or most popular songs which are verycool. However, when I talk with my friends who are older than me, they have noidea about these songs, let alone give me advices.
However, when it comesto making important decisions in my life, I would ask people who have moreexperience than me for suggestion. After all, people who older than me alwayshave better understanding of society and life, sometime they may experience theprocesses that we are going to undertake. A good example is that when I was notsure about what to do to prepare my material to apply a school in a foreigncountry, I asked for help from my friend Xiang, who is a Ph. D candidate in a prestigiousinstitution in Europe. Because he had applied and know the details andpotential traps, his advices give me great help.
Also, when I had to solve the problems inmy study, I would listen to both of my peers and teachers. In this way, I couldget more information and get a whole picture of my subject. When want to designmy own experiment to investigate a interesting subject, I first asked myteacher about the research's significance and the general direction, for theyhave much broader horizon and know whether my research proposal could makecontribution to our knowledge or not. Then I discussed with my peers who couldhelp figure out details and how to conduct the experiment step by step.Together with the suggestions from both of my teachers and my peers, I solvedall the problems I encountered and finished it.
In sum, when we can not solve the problemsby ourselves, the advices given by others always help because they may providea differentperspective and help us to reframe the problems, thus give us insights and makeus find an optimalsolution. |
