In the reading passage, the author contends that some critics cast doubt on the accuracy of Chevalier's memoir by presenting three reasons respectively. According to the listening material, however, the speaker believes that Chevalier's memoir is reliable and opposes the three reasons mentioned in the reading passage separately.

First of all, according to the author, Chevalier is not considerate as a rich people because he had borrowed lots of money from a Swiss merchant. Nevertheless, the speaker thinks that the loan of the merchant can not be the evidence that Chevalier is not a rich people. The speaker says that Chevalier did spend a great deal of money on parties and gambling and thus he had to borrow money from others during the period when he was waiting for the arrival of his money. In this way, by using the loan of the merchant alone, people can not say that Chevalier was not wealthy.

Second, the author contends that the conversations between Chevalier and Voltaire are not reliable given the fact that Chevalier did not write the memoir until many years after the conversation occurred. To the contrary, the speaker argues that Chevalier recorded the conversation between Voltaire and himself every night and there's witnesses said that Chevalier wrote his memoir by using these notes and records.

Finally, the critics in the reading passage suspect that Chevalier did escape from Venetian prison by breaking the ceiling and believe that he had not need to do so because he had lots of politically well-connected friends who may make Chevalier free by bribing the jailers. In contrast, the speaker disagree with this perspective by showing the fact that many people who got much more politically well-connected friends and who were in the Venetian prison as Chevalier were not able to gain freedom by bribing the jailers. Moreover, she emphasizes that, there's government documents recording that the ceiling of the Venetian prison broke after the escape of Chevalier, which exactly point out that the statement made in the reading passage is an incorrect one.

It is uncommon to hear that people complain about the impoliteness of their neighbors or of the people they meet by expressing how eagerly they want to go back to the past. From my point of view, people today do seem to be less polite and friendly than they used to be because they simply do not spend enough time with the people around them.

Initially, the increasing busy tempo of people's life may contribute to this unpleasant phenomenon. How could you expect a business man who had worked all day long can give happy smile to his neighbor every night when he returns from work with exhaustion? It is also understandable for a student who is overwhelmed by heavy workload refuse to give a kiss to his families. More exactly, it is the fierce competitions of the society that shifts people's attention from their friends, their families and the people they concerned about to their working field. And such competition also deprives people's spare time which is supposed to be spent with their friends to enhance their relationship. In this way, it is inevitable that people are becoming less friendly.

Moreover, the advanced technologies also make people less congenial. One example aptly illustrates this point involves the Internet. Many people, especially young people, like playing online games. They spend tons of time on these games in order to gain those virtual achievement and they also believe that they are having social interaction with people because they tend to play games in groups. However, it is not true. The more time they spend in these virtual worlds the less real social interaction with. As a result, people who are immersed in the virtual worlds begin to care little about the real person around them and they do not pay attention on establishing friendship with other people expect those guys who also play in the same game. In this respect, the Internet make them totally addicted to the virtual worlds and how could you expect they would care about the real world, not mention to be friendly to people.

To sum up, we can not deny that people are becoming less friendly today because they spend less time with their families and pay less attention to the people around them. In order to make the whole world friendlier, we people have to do something right now. Just ask yourself what is more important to you and adjust your timetable and allocate more time to communicate with your families and friends.

According to the reading passage, the author speaks highly of the fuel-cell engines and believes that it would be a proper alternative to internal-combustion engines by presenting three different reasons. In the listening material, the speaker partly agrees with the statement about pollution and resource made in the passage, however, she contends that fuel-cell engines would not be a good choice.

First of all, the author says that the resources utilized by internal-combustion engines are finite resource and the resource employed by fuel-cell engines can be obtained from various plentiful sources. The speaker agrees with this point. Nonetheless, she thinks that main problem lay in the difficult of getting hydrogen since water can not be used to produce hydrogen directly and it needs elaborate technologies to lower the water's temperature to extremely cold to gain hydrogen.

Second, the author states that hydrogen-based fuel cells will make little pollution to environment while the current engines will do harm to the environment. Similarly, the speaker also agrees with this idea. However, she believes that it's not the vehicles equipped the new engines but the processes which produce the resource needed by the new engines will aggravate the environment problem because these processes will also produce the by-product of burning oil.

Finally, the author believes that fuel-cell engines will save people money because they are more efficiently than internal-combustion engines. To the contrary, the speaker disagrees with this idea. The kind of metal used to make fuel-cell engines is rare and expensive and there's not substitute for this kind of metal yet. As a result, it would cost people much to operate such a new engine.

It is not uncommon to see that most movies and televisions depicts similar plot that good people being rewarded and bad people being punished at the end of the story and many people also love such happy endings. However, I do not think that all the TV shows or movies have to play in this same way because such good endings will inevitably harm the development of arts.

Admittedly, showing good people being rewarded and bad guys being punished have several benefits for people, especially children. On the one hand, people will begin to admire those good people because of their rewarding as well as their valuable virtues. On the other hand, people will also dislike those bad guys and thus do not want to be one of them since their ending are miserable. These benefits are so obvious. You could hardly imagine how the society will be if children sitting in front of the TV are showed that the superman was doomed by those bad guys. It would be horrible to think that children will begin to chase after those bad guys and even want to be a bad guy when they grow up. In this respect, how dare we allow movies and TV shows to show good people being punished while bad people go unchecked as these mass media play a crucial role in the socialization of children?

However, it would be a disaster for the development of arts if all the directors and playwrights insist on this kind of plot forever. For one thing, such similar plot will greatly decrease the imagination and creative of the artisans who make movies or TV shows. Isn't it? The playwrights won't make any effort to create amazing and surprising story because the fates of the characters have already been restricted by the plot with which people are familiar. It is impossible for artisans to come up with something surprising to surprise the audiences. For another thing, audiences will also get tired with this sort of plot. For instance, since the most fascinating part of the movie, the plot that beyond audiences' imagination is replaced by plot with which audiences are familiar, how could you expect a man who goes to cinema to watch a mysterious movie can have good time. As a result, fewer people will pay to go to cinema and a vicious cycle begins.

To sum up, it is totally not a good idea if all movies and TV shows are going to have similar good endings because the diversification of arts would be compromised. In order to avoid this, adults should provide proper guides to their children and help them establish correct value standard and the censor institutions should strike a balance between the development of arts and the value standard of populace.

It is inevitable that when people move to new city or new country they tend to lose some of their old friends and in many people's perspective their old friends definitely consist a indispensable part of their daily life. In this respect, is it a bad choice for people to move to new place? In my point of view, I do not think that such choice is a bad one. Generally speaking, it may do more good than hurt.

Admittedly, it is a virtually sad moment when people who move to new place say good bye to their dear old friends. In fact, friendship is basically based on the interaction and communication between friends and as people move to another place, they have to put more weights on their new social circle and thus communicate with their old friends lesser. As a result, those imitate friends will gradually become strangers with the past of time. This is really a pity, isn't it? For instance, I can not even remember my the name of my best friend who was my classmate in primary school because I move to study in another city's school after I graduated from primary school. Last summer holiday, I went back to my primary school and met him. Sadly, we could only remember the good time we had but we could not talk happily as we used to do since we have almost became strangers.

However, I believe that such change in life will do more good than hurt. On the one hand, since new places stand for new opportunities and new chances, both of which may facilitate one's career development. One the other hand, new places also mean new social circles, that is to say, you can also make friends in the new places or, perhaps, meet some wonderful guys. One example aptly illustrates this point is my father. He used to be a teacher in university. However, he abandoned his teaching job and decided to move to Shenzhen to develop his own business because he thought that the young city will bring him lots of chances and space for development. He gradually expanded his business and meet some people who are also aggressive and intelligent and are interested in his business. Finally, they combined their own business together and it turns out to be a really successful company. It is true that he loses many old friends who are still teaching in the university. However, the new place brings him quality life and new friends for compensation.

In sum, though moving to new place will make you lose some old friends it may also bring you unexpected benefits.
