28"Students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. Students who have learned only facts have learned very little."
As the speaker said, learning the ideas, trends, and concepts about the facts could be better to help us memory the ones indeed. However, I disagree the suggestion from the claim that there is no other way to remember facts apart from the way motioned above.
Admittedly, to understand and master the ideas, trends, and concepts of knowledge will find the good way to remember very much and learn the facts profoundly and in turn acquire knowledge. if a student didn’t learn the concept of mathematical formula, maybe he would finish some simple problems but he mustn’t solve some more difficult ones. A renowned Russian writer Maxim Gory have said, Being reluctant to think, unwilling to study intensively and under-stand deeply and being complacent and satisfied at negligible knowledge all are the cause of poor intelligence, which can be germen as "foolish". In some cases, knowing the concept of the facts is more efficient than the rote memorization that only study the ones themselves.
Did we should study the concept or ideas about the facts all over the world before we memory the facts? Of course not, as we know, the majority of English words originate from other countries’ language such as French, German, Greek and so on. Indeed knowing the headstream of these words will contribute us to remember these words penetratingly, but not all the words need us to know ins and outs of them, and it will waste much time to some people, especially the beginner. As the example above, during infant time, remembering the more words from the outside, the more quickly a study talent of baby will be improved. The way is more effective than the one to just import a word and other messages around the one into baby’s brain. In fact, the method is of little benefit to the novice. Because they should have rote memorization of some fundamental element in some subjects such as chemistry, geography, and etc to familiarity with these subjiects , before we deep into the knowledge.
Moreover, I can’t afford a consequence to neglect the blind following to study the concepts or ideas about the facts, which is depicted by the invention or author with limited knowledge. One telling example involves my uneasiness about the theory of geocentric system. After all, in the era of low level in science, the mass follow to studying so-called true concept about the geocentric system. If there had were no a Polish called Copernicus, who advanced the theory that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun and disrupted the geocentric system supported by Christian church, the astronomy would stay the same and have no such significant breakthrough in human history. We could learn concepts or ideas about the facts, but not confide the theory absolutely.
To sum up, we should distinguish what is important to learn from what is trivial and choose the suitable way to study the facts. Of course, on the basis of that the ideas, trends, concept about the fact is true, otherwise we should have our independent judgment. |
