The lecture apparently refutes the points illustrated in the reading material. According to the reading passage, some scientists made a study about the sea otter whose number is decreasing. The expert blamed it for environmental pollution or attacks by predators. On the contrary, the lecture contends an opposite stand that the declining of the sea otter species is not a result of environmental pollution.
First of all, the reading passage believes that there are obvious known sources of pollution along the Alaskan coast and water sample also revealed the poisonous chemicals which could lead to death of the sea otter. In contrast, the speaker thinks that there are no sea otter dead found along the coast where the possible pollution happened from the reading passage. Since there is not an adequate death proof to display, the quality of water along the coast has nothing to do with the life of sea otter. Possibly they collectively migrate to other part of the ocean living a better life. So, the lectures totally disagree with the view made in the reading.
Second, the reading passage stated that other sea animals inhabiting in same ocean along the Alaskan coast were declining as well, so the pollution actually affect the whole ecosystem, contradicting what is discussed in the lecture that species sharing the same area has different extent of resistance to life-threatening infections. Besides, the death of seals and sea lions could have other outer threat expect for water pollution.
Finally, the reading material raises the issue that uneven concentrations of pollutants along the Alaskan coast possibly led by ocean currents caused variation of sea otter decline in different location. This above point disagrees with the perspective from the speaker which states that the sea otter itself prefers to shallow water while large sea animals like seals and sea lions will certainly stay in deep water.
Therefore, the contents in the reading passage are totally jeopardized by the speaker and the speaker has totally different ideas on the topics made in the reading.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Do you think people should buy things made in their own country; even the price is higher than same things made somewhere else?

    Whether we should buy things made in our own country with a higher price than same things made somewhere else, different people will have different views due to their background. As for me I strongly disagree with the idea and the reasons are as follows;
First of all, for the customers’ sake, we do not have to buy comparatively expensive products made in our country; especially not all people are able to afford higher-priced things. For example, here if we have the same amount of money like 100 dollars to buy a same kind of toothbrush with different country of origin A and B, with lower price of A product we could buy large quantity in absolute. If I use 10 out of 100 bucks on toothbrush and with the remaining money I could make other purchase that met my needs. Thus, I not only first have I what I intend to buy but also many things else. Actually this is simple mathematics known by common people and people have rational reasons on how their money to be spent.
Second, for the sake of manufacturer at home, we should not buy a more expensive things produced in our country. Only by positive competition can our companies learn to make high quality products and realize true growth and progress. Positive competition is essential to the development of an enterprise which is at a preliminary stage of his field and he wants to do a better job in the long term. This is also law of market in free economy. If we all buy things made form companies at home for helping them, as we thought we could help. The manufacturers will not have to learn from their equivalent abroad because they already have us such a big consuming market which will obscure their backwardness. Finally the companies will of course end up in close with thousands of job openings lost. People engaged in this circle will be inevitably influenced.
In conclusion, no matter for sake of customers or manufacturers at home people should not buy things made in their own country; even the price is higher than same things made somewhere else.

The lecture apparently refutes the points illustrated in the reading material. According to the reading passage, people nowadays read less literature than they used to which has very serous effects for reading public, culture and the prospect of literature as a whole. On the contrary, the lecture contends an opposite stand that less reading literature will not lead the decline of the above three.
First of all, the reading passage believes that a decrease in book reading especially conspicuous for literature is so bad that nothing else could intellectually stimulate or benefit the reading public. In contrast, the speaker thinks that not just literature can provide intellectual stimulation or exercise imagination. Instead, a lot of books about other subjects such as science, history and politics are nutritious enough to play the role of education and enlightenment as literature.
Second, the reading passage stated that the time people used to spend in reading will be diverted to trivial forms of entertainment which lowered the general cultural level, contradicting what is discussed in the lecture that new forms of culture like music and movie also could cultivate people’ artistic imagination and expression. Beside, the cultural forms are undergoing dramatic changes as time went by; so many more forms have come to the public. They are newly come but not represent they are harmful factors to lower recipients’ cultural level.
Finally the reading material raises the issue that due to the decline of today’s readers the literature works are not as popular as before, so the less energy and money is been put into the writing industry, the fewer excellent works come out. The above point disagrees with the perspective from the lecture which views that the literature’s decline cannot blame on readers. In turn, the reason why the public reads less is because the literature written nowadays is much more difficult to read or understand than before. Readers today do not have many options available to choose so this is the literature authors’ problems.
So, the contents in the reading passage are totally criticised by the speaker and the lecture has totally different ideas on the topics made in the reading.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People would be happier if they had fewer possessions.
    I don’t agree with the above statement that people would be happier if they had fewer possessions. The reasons are as follows;
The main reason for my propensity against the statement is that happiness is people’s personal business which has no direct relation to the quantity of possessions one has. Because each one has his or her unique personality which just belongs to him or herself. Different person has different ways of happiness pursuing as well as standards towards happiness. Furthermore the standard is never so called “something” alone. On the contrary it is absolutely a multiple value systems. As the old saying goes, one man’s meat is another man’s poison. Let us take US former president George. W. Bush and his brother as an example: one day, when their mother Barbara Bush was asked “you have such a very excellent son that could be the president, and you must be very proud of him?” but her answer is “I also have a son who is a farmer, and indeed I’m proud for them both. Because they are all happy about what are they are doing. ” As we all know that the President certainly owns more possessions than his sibling, but does that mean his farmer brother is happier than him? That is not always the case. So this example indicates that whether you have fewer possessions or not has no direct connection to your happiness.
Another reason which can be seen by everyone is that not all people with fewer possessions are happier. For instance, people from rural place possess few things. They are too poor to live the basic life. It is reported 8% of the people in the world spend less than 1 dollar each day which cannot meet their basic life needs, they even don’t have opportunity to be healed when they are ill, let alone to pursuit the happiness far ahead. There is a long way to go. The same situation, not all people with more possessions are more upset than others. Oppositely some tycoons make full use of their money by wisely managing their wealth. The money they earned by hard working is fair and square. They use part of them to make donations to people in need. That could not be nobler than any deed else.
In a word, I don’t agree with the above statement that people would be happier if they had fewer possessions.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? In order to achieve the happiness of yourself, you have to try to make other people happy?
I agree with the above statement that in order to achieve the happiness of yourself, you have to try to make other people happy.
The main reason for my propensity for the statement is that the interaction and social connection among people affect everyone for sure. We people are social animals who are engaged in a broad social network and we depend on each other. Only when people around you or connected to you are happy could you be happy from the bottom of the heart. Not everyone is able to be (Robinson Cruse)改成 Robinson Crusoe who lives in the isolated island for much of his life. Obviously after the days of isolation it proved that he cannot involve in society any longer. It is no doubt that his family and friends were not happy of losing him for years and he lived a monotonous life without any joy at all on the island. This is the social factor.
Another reason can be seen by everyone is that the blood relation decides you have to think for the happiness of your parents who give you birth and of your children whom you give birth to. This is not determined by your brain or mind but something called instinct. You do everything to make them happy not because you live on them or any profit, instead, it is law of nature. This is natural factor.
(The argument I support in the first paragraph is also in a position of advantage.)(很绕) 改成--The third reason is that happiness will be doubled even tripled when you share with others. In that way, your happiness is infinitely enlarged by many times. For instance, if you win a 5 million dollar’s lottery, you are extremely happy about it. You could spend it as you like, to buy a fancy car, a big house and anything you dreamed to own. Or you also could donate some part to the charity for children in poverty stricken regions. Those are ways of spending. But I believe the latter one would obviously spread your happiness to a larger extent. You share your happiness with so many people that the happiness itself sows and grow with many more lives. Under such circumstance could you be happier than even before.
In a word, in order to achieve the happiness of yourself, it is sagacious that if you try to make other people happy.
Trust your talents and interest. No worries.

The lecture apparently refutes the points illustrated in the reading material. According to the reading material, the settlements of Chao Canyon have three possible uses that are residential house, food storage and ceremonial centers. However, the lecture contends an opposite stand that the "great houses" do not have the above uses at all.
First, the reading passage holds that the Chao houses are like the large, famous "apartment buildings" in which many people in New Mexico have been living for hundreds of years, so the houses were for residential. Contradicting to the point above, the lecture states that if 100 people live in the house, there would be many fireplaces for people's daily cooking discovered. However, from the inside house, (there are)删掉 few fireplaces have been found. In a large room of the house, fireplaces found are available for only 10 families. But the rooms in total could hold over 100 families. Therefore, the house could not be residential house.
Second, the reading material claims that the Chaco structures were used for their long-lasting food storage thanks to the big size of the great houses. On the contrary, the lecture disagree with the above idea because no trace of the grain maize in the houses, either the big containers which should be used to contain the grain.
Last but least, from the reading passage, the house were thought to be used as ceremonial centers because pots and mound which served people meals in the ceremonies are found. However, the speaker cast doubt on the views mentioned above, and he depicts that beside the pots and mound, a large amount of building materials like sand, stone and construction tools are found as well. So the pots and mound are more likely to be the trashes left by the (architect is planner instead of删除被代替为)construction worker/builders when they can not use up all the material.
In conclusion, the points raised by the reading passage are criticized by the lecture from each angle. The lecture totally disagrees with the reading material.

The lecture apparently refutes the points illustrated in the reading material. According to reading passage; recently a professionally painted portrait of a teenage girl on sale is believed to be the famous novelist Jane Austen.
On the contrary, the lecture contends an opposite stand that the subject in the portrait could not be Jane for three reasons.

First, the reading raises an issue that Austen's family permitted to use the portrait as an illustration in a publication of her letters decades after her death, so Austen's family recognized the portrait as Jane. However, from the speaker's perspective, not a single member of Austen family personally has come out to the public to recognize it was Jane in the portrait. Furthermore, the portrait was finished 17 years after Jane’s death, so the Austen's family could not know what Jane exactly looked like when she was a teenage girl.

Second, the reading material holds that the face in the portrait clearly resembles the one in Jane's sister Cassandra's sketch which depict Jane. Contradicting to the idea above, the lecture states that actually the Austen's was a large extended family then, the person depicted in the portrait could be any one of Jane's female cousins or cousins’ children who resembles Jane at 17. It is recorded that Marian Capein, a distant niece of Austen looked alike Jane.
Third, from the reading, the portrait's style connects to the portrait painter Humphrey who would be hired by the Austen's family. He is said to be active at the period when Jane was the age of teenager which is contradictory to the views made in the lecture that style can not be the only thing to consider the identification of the portrait. More importantly, the black canvas used in the portrait is recorded to be sold from a man called Willam Leg and he did not sell canvas in London until Jane was 27 instead of 17, the age of the girl in the portrait.
In a word, the lecture totally disagrees with the points made by the reading passage.

The lecture apparently refutes the points illustrated in the reading passage. According to the reading material, dinosaurs are endotherms instead of reptiles though long assumed. On the contrary, the lecture contends an opposite stand with many scientists’ arguments that dinosaurs are not endotherms in fact.
The first reason in the reading material is that dinosaurs’ fossils were found in polar area, and only endotherms could live actively in cold environment like the polar region. The point the professor uses to cast doubt on the reading’s point is that the environment dinosaurs used to live was far warmer than polar region where the dinosaurs’ fossil were found. Furthermore, although fossil was found, the dinosaurs did not have their life end there. Even in cold days polar dinosaurs could choose to migrate to warmer places or just hibernating. So the presence of dinosaurs’ fossil cannot prove that they were able to stay there as endotherms.
Another standpoint of the reading passage holds that the leg position and movement of dinosaur conform to feature of endotherms. However, the lecture states that because of this body structure, the legs underneath the body, is able to support more weight, so the dinosaurs could grow to very big size. Being large is advantageous and dinosaurs don’t need to run like other endotherms. So dinosaurs are not endotherms according to the lecture.
Last but not least, the reading material argued that dinosaurs have haversian canals which are fundamental of animal’s rapid growth and usually processed by endotherms. Contrary to the above idea, the lecture views that the dinosaurs also have growth rings which indicate their rapid growing time. The growth rings also show the periodical growth of dinosaurs meaning they indicate time when the dinosaurs grow slowly or even stop growing. This statement contradicts the fact that endotherms constantly grow even under cooler atmosphere.
In the conclusion, the point made in the lecture contrasts with what is presented in the reading.

The lecture apparently refutes the points illustrated in the reading passage. According to the reading material, car manufacturers and governments have been seeking a replacement for automobile's main source of power and the hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine was thought to be most promising. But the lecture disagrees with the idea above for 3 reasons.
First, the reading passage claims that the internal-combustion engine relies on petroleum which will be easily run out as a finite resource in the future, but the hydrogen needed for fuel-cell engines can not be depleted due to the availability of hydrogen source. However, in the opinion of the speaker, the hydrogen is not that easy to produce. Moreover, the hydrogen power that we need is pure liquid produced under very low temperature rather than substance directly deprived from water or natural gas.
Second, from the reading material, the hydrogen-based fuel cells are attractive because their burning by-product is water which is harmless for the environment but carbon dioxide, the byproduct of burning ill is the main source of environment pollution. However, the lecture argues that the process of utilizing water or natural gas to produce hydrogen brings about severe pollution. In the process, coal and oil will be burned so the carbon dioxide will come out in turn to pollute the environment.
Last but not least, the reading passage holds that the hydrogen is economically competitive thanks to its high efficiency. The lecture disputes by the fact that expensive metal pluntime(platinum)have to be used during the hydrogen production process determined that the final product could never be cheaper than oil and natural gas power. Furthermore, the expensive metal plantime(platinum) could not be replaced by any other cheaper ingredients.
To conclude, the reading passage is challenged by the lecture. The lecture totally disagrees with the points made by the reading material.

The lecture apparently refutes the points from the reading passage. According to reading passage; salvage logging could be beneficial both to a damaged forest and to the economy. On the contrary, the lecture cast doubt on the above idea due to following reasons.
First, the reading material raises that salvage logging could make room for fresh growth of new trees by removing the remains of dead trees. However, the speaker disagrees with the point mentioned above by suggesting that the dead trees should not be removed due to the nutrients given off to the soil during the dead trees' decomposition process. Moreover those nutrients could help the growth of the future trees.
Second, form the reading passage, the dead trees take up space and the decaying wood is highly hospitable for a large number of insects like spruce bark beetle which would cause damage to the forest. But this is contradictory to the view made by the professor who states that the spruce bark beetles have lived in the forest for more than 100 years. They have done anything but damage to the habitat. In addition, the habitat is also for birds and other animals beside the spruce beetles.
Third, the reading contends that salvage logging has economical benefits by providing wood and more job opportunities for the local residents. But the speaker holds a different perspective that the additional jobs could not be supplied because logging requires experienced professionals outsiders instead of local people. Besides, the wood source provided is just temporary so the economic benefits do not last long.
To conclude, the reading passage is totally disputed by the lecture and the speaker are against the views made in the reading material.

I agree with the statement that it’s more important to spend money to build art museums and music performance center than to build recreational facilities such as swimming pool, playgrounds. Only we build more art museums and music performance center could we absorb nutrients from art as much as possible and we could benefit more from art. Art is chicken soup to our soul, and it has been inspiring us for long. It witnesses the human history and progress of culture so we learn a lot from art.
First, to build art museums and music performance center could provide space for children to develop their art potential from early childhood. Art and music are important for children. It is commonly recognized that education is foundation of a country. At the same time, children are hope of the whole country. We certainly should make more investment in education especially on art and music education. Art museums and music center supply access for children to art and music as much as possible. It is reported that music and art could enhance development of intellectual ability. Children with more exposure of art and music would be brighter than those with less nurture on art and music.
Second, open art museum and music performance center could also provide us place to learn more about history and to acknowledge our ancestors’ achievements. More importantly, going art museum and music performance center could broaden our horizon. Usually people stay in the same place all the time stressed by work load and social obligation so they could hardly have time or chances to learn new things. The art museums and music performance center happen to be such perfect places for people to learn and improve capacity of art appreciation.
To conclude, it is more important to spend money to build art museums and music performance center than to build recreational facilities such as swimming pool, playgrounds.
