Issue 23 contemporary technology makes available to many small pieces of factual in information. As a result, people have become so preoccupied with bits of fragmented information that they pay too little attention to the larger issues and overall perspectives.
当前的科学技术提供的信息总是由很多小的信息片段组成。这导致了人们总是专注于零碎的信息，而很少注意到大的问题和整体的框架结构。


Certainly it is true that with the amazing advance of modern science and technology, individual researchers have been irresistibly obliged into ever-narrowing field of study. For them, they have much less of incentives or even an opportunity to concern about the larger issues and overall perspectives. But as to society as a whole, it is entirely the other way around. In fact, the focus of individuals on narrowed studying area makes it far much more efficient and effective for human beings to deal with larger issues and to think with wide perspectives.

For one thing, it is hard to be refuted that only when people have deepened into the narrowed aspects of any issues and make clear of all fragmented information about it, can we ultimately attain a full appreciation of the overall issue. Or else, the wider the perspective is, the more likely the observation only serves as a fallacy. Does anyone hope that a car can be produced out without the profound study into its different parts, such as engine or chassis? Similarly, until we make a great breakthrough in exploring the internal working of human brains, it is impossible for scientists to completely understand such larger abstract issues, such as what is the beings, where the beings is from and where the beings will go. Therefore, in the nature of things, paying attention to the narrowed field is not necessary to be detrimental to people’s ability to tackle larger issues and to people’s wholly thinking with wide perspectives. Instead, at many times it benefits the latter.

The growing of an entrepreneur can serve as another illuminating example of the contribution of narrow focus on specific areas to larger issues and overall perspectives. The entrepreneur obviously belongs to those who care about overall issues and think over every day with wide perspectives, for that he/she manages almost all aspects of a firm. But has anyone known of an entrepreneur who began with C.E.O rather than a mechanic or an accountant. The experience as a specialist in narrowed area is very critical to his/her later promotion. Only those who had an excellent performance in narrow areas have the opportunity to get the promotion to the position of major managers.

Moreover, though most individual researchers have possibly become more preoccupied with narrow areas, the society as a whole does not so necessarily. As a matter of fact, the large-scale cooperation in scientific research has greatly enhanced the ability of the modern society to deal with the larger issues. That is to say, despite the ever-narrowing focus of individuals, the whole society today does not lose a wide perspective. On the contrary, it can even attain a much broader perspective by aggregating the contributions of all individuals. The Apollo program for landing on the moon was such a typical example, which had employed more than one hundred thousand outstanding scientists and engineers from quite different areas. But the well organization and cooperation largely compensated the deficiency of narrow focus in individuals, and made this program become the model of that narrow focus in individuals can create the wider perspective for the society as a whole. This is perhaps why the development of modern society does not slow down, instead is becoming much more rapid than before confronted with the “narrow” focus.  

In conclusion, despite the tendency of narrow focus of individuals in information, it does benefit to both the society and the individuals to help them attain a wider perspective. The society as a whole doesn’t suffer from this tendency, by contrast it can benefit from it for the well organization and cooperation in research. (604)
