TOPIC: ISSUE39 - "The intellectual benefits of attending a university or college are vastly overrated: most people could learn more by studying and reading on their own for four years than by pursuing a university or college degree."
WORDS: 675          TIME: 00:43:52          DATE: 2011/3/15 22:52:17

Responding to the recent progress in technology and a myriad of information available, many people are currently asserting that learning by themselves rather than attending university can be efficient as well. However, this assertion has exaggerated the benefits of self-learning, and largely overlooked the prowess of useful instructions provided by universities. Furthermore, spending several years in a university does not only yield returns on intellectual enrichment, but also contribute to a promotion of other social skills, which is essential for one's future career.

Admittedly, the highly advanced technology is making countless pieces of information accessible for every ordinary people, thus seeming to demonstrate that university is no longer the only place where we can learn knowledge. For example, the widely used Internet plays revolutionary role in the alteration of humans' thinking and behaving patterns. When browsing on the Internet, people can easily gain access to massive information, and can even retrieve it with no obstacles later. This progress seems to largely violate the function of a university, which is conventionally perceived as a main entry to a large variety of knowledge. However, on no account can we hastily draw a conclusion before careful and thorough deliberation.

In the modern society, a university should no longer be regarded as merely a place disseminating superficial knowledge. Due to the tendency of information explosion which makes numerous messages available, our focus should no longer be restrained to conventional perceptions which narrowly emphasize the function of hoarding and promulgating information. Instead, what is of more significance is the important role of universities in which they can equip individual learners with the capability of analyzing and interpreting data. Systematic and inspired as a university can be, it actually ignites the spark of intellectual minds in a more efficient way: imparting active and independent thinking patterns rather than getting trapped in a passive mode. This advantage can hardly be emulated by individual learning process since professionals in a university can be helpful in evoking ideas and avoiding detours. Therefore, the high status of universities cannot be easily violated as innovative and thoughtful instructions are, at least, of equal significance with personal endeavor.

Moreover, what we can acquire through attending a university is far more than a gain in intellectual equity. Social skills, such as a sense of cooperation, can also be acquired during the learning process. Nowadays, it is prevalent in a university that lots of tasks require to be accomplished by group work. Thus, this provides university students, especially those impending graduates, with a great chance of simulating the situation they are likely to encounter in the near future. Through this training, they can easily grasp the real point of cooperation and negotiation, which may cost a lot if not being trained for such a skill. This contributes to an enhancement of one's personal qualities as well. On the other hand, students working and studying with their peers at university can also become more adaptive to a competitive environment. Scholarship offered is not only a momentum for students' learning, but also a force that makes them accustomed to the competition. Therefore, when it comes to a fierce campaign which is inevitable in their career, they can, at least, possess a well-prepared mind. Hence, the learning experience in universities can reinforce one's ability in different ways: the acquisition of cooperative spirit and accommodation to a competitive living environment can certainly contribute to a successful career. Undoubtedly, such experience requiring gregariousness seems impossible to be accomplished through individual learning by oneself.

To conclude, confronted with an era of information explosion, we cannot deny the tendency that individual learners can easily get access to analogous knowledge imparted in a university. Nevertheless, it should also be recognized that a university is not just a place for disseminating knowledge. Rather, its real focus should be cast on the promotion of one's own character, which is also beneficial for their future career. As we can acquire innovative thinking patterns and social skills on campus, people should not arbitrarily discredit the function of modern universities.
