In this recommendation, the Homan Resources Manager concluded that the present president, Pat Salvo made our profits decline. While it may take twice the salary that Pat has been receiving, it will be worthwhile to hire Rose Winnings, the president of Starlight Jewelry, which company's profits increase dramatically over past several years. Thus, if our company, Fancy Toy Company hires Rose, our profits will definitely increase. It seems logical at first glance, however, I find several logical flaws of this recommendation.

First, the manager unfairly assumes the decline in profits is the bad leadership of Pat. Only according to the last three quarters profits is not reliable to conclude that Pat is not a good president. The manager did not provide the cause of the decline in profits. It is entire possible that it is a depression time for toy marker, so all toy companies, including Fancy Toy, have a decline in profits. Thus the conclusions that Pat's leadership lead to the decline and replace her with Rose will ensure an increasing profit are dubious. Even if it is not because the depression of market, without more detailed information we cannot judge whether this decline will continue in the future. If the decline is temporary and the profits are likely to increase in the next quarter, then there is no need to change the current president. Moreover, without more information of the previous performance of Pat, we cannot estimate her performance just based on the last three quarters’' profit. Perhaps Pat has excellent method to increase the profits.

Second, the manager hastily concludes that Rose is the only right choice to increase our company’s profits. The manager did not provide any evidence that the growing profits in Starlight Jewerly are the contribution of Rose. Perhaps it is a booming time for all jewelry companies; other jewelry companies even have a higher profit rate. Even if it is the leadership of Rose lead to the growing profits of Starlight Jewelry, we cannot conclude that she can ensure the profits of Fancy Toy Company. Since Starlight and Fancy are totally two different companies, the management patterns are different, it is not reasonable to conclude that Rose will perform as well as she in Starlight. Perhaps it will take a long time for Rose to master the overall situation in Fancy Toy, so a quick increase in profits is not warranted.

Additionally, the assumption that Rose will be our company's president is unwarranted. The manager did not provide any evidence whether Rose will accept this offer. We do not know whether twice the salary of Pat is higher than the salary of Rose when she is in Starlight Jewelry. If twice the salary of Pat is still much lower than the current salary of Rose, it is not likely Rose will come to Fancy Toy. Even it is much higher, perhaps Rose like the company culture of Starlight, and like the colleagues she works with for so many year, and therefore would not like to come to Fancy Toy. Perhaps there are many other candidates who are the presidents of other toy companies, and have a good knowledge of operating toy company.

To sum up, the recommendation is not convincing as it stands. To strengthen it the manager must provide evidence that it is the leadership of Pat lead to the decline of profits, and this tendency will continue in the future. To better evaluate whether Rose is suitable for this position, the manager must provide detailed information of Rose's performance in Starlight Jewelry, and ensure she will have the same or even better performance when she comes to our company and make our profits increase.
