TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."WORDS: 570 TIME: 00:39:21 DATE: 2011-5-2 19:40:34This statement pointed out that we can judge people’s attitudes and their society’s values by the way people look, dress and act. In my point of view, it is probably true in some cases, but further scrutiny reveals that it cannot be tenable all the time.First of all, I concede that the way people look and dress, in some cases, really shows their attitudes and interests. For instance, Arab women often wear clothes that contain veils to make their faces unseen by strangers, revealing that they have culture which still holds the opinion that women belong to men like a property. Another example is that we can always see that American women have a dressing style which focus on making their body fit and expressing others deeply, which shows that America have a culture that considers more about individual's freedom. What’s more, the way people act, including customs, rituals, and their words in daily life, also reveals their attitudes and a society's ideas. For example, parents and children have an equal relationship in America, while in China, it is not the case, children must do everything to show their respect to their parents. This difference in the way people act shows that China and America have different values on the status of parents. However, these facts cannot indicate that we can judge a society's ideas and values simply by the way people look, dress and act, it may comes to misunderstanding in many cases. One reason is that a society's ideas and values are composed by its members' ideas and values, that is to say, just relying on a single person's appearance and manner to summarize a society's ideas and values is not logically acceptable. For example, America, which is famous for its diversity and intercultural atmosphere, has various kinds of ideas and values that cannot be measured only by several people's appearance and manners, in other words, nobody can claim that his or her appearance and manners represents American style, in fact, it is only a very small part which contributes to the American ideas and values as a whole. It indicates that some factors really make it impossible for people’s appearance to reveal their society’s value and ideas.Last but not least, the statement fails to consider that a people's appearance and manner is not necessarily a true indicator of the society he lives in. In other words, it may not reflect what he really thinks. For example, Japanese are usually very polite to strangers, but it does not indicate that they are hostile, not to mention that Japan is hostile, it actually reveals that they are very cautious when facing strangers. That is why so many people who have lived in Japan for decades still feel cannot be a member of the social main stream. So what we have seen in a person's appearance and behavior cannot be the evidence of a society's features. Instead, the truth can be quite different from what you see, In sum, as we interact with people from different cultural backgrounds, we should not only consider what they look like and what they behave, many other variables, such as history, personality and education level should also be taken into consideration. Then we can have a deeper and clearer understanding about them, and build close relationship more effectively. |
