呵呵,有时间要上,没有时间也要创造时间也要上!
In fact we often hear above assertion all the time, don’t we? In my point of view, it is because people overemphasize contemporary problems while neglecting progresses that current society has made. Once current society is assessed in a(an)impartial way without prejudice(呵呵,有点像句子填空,一条公正的道路without__?_ ,不如去掉without prejudice) one will surely find that contemporary society is better than before although it has some problems.
I admit that there are many problems which don’t exist in past societies, such as drug addiction, environment pollution, international terrorism, etc. But is(does) there exist one society that has no any problems(problem)? No. It's inevitable for a society to have problems like this or that. From the point of history we can see that different societies have kinds of problems some of which were severer and caused more terrible results than contemporary problems. For instance, in medieval Europe people must confront several menaces such as persecution from churches, serious plagues, poor living conditions and poor human rights. However, these problems had(have) been solved in present society.
People's complaints about society are expressions of their individual feeling toward some social issues that they are not(多了not) dissatisfied with and often these complaints are exaggerated. Human is a kind of animal keeping pursuing for perfection and it is not surprised to hear all kinds of complaints. For instance when I was a little boy, many boys’ biggest dream was to have a beautiful bike as their friends'. Nowadays we can often hear young men complain that they have no money to buy a sports-car .They may have forgotten their child dream long ago(their dream in their childhood). In America, during the great depression, almost one third of workers lost their jobs, but people survived that hard time without many complaints. While today when the unemployment rate rises to 5 percent there will be millions of pessimistic claims like "What a damn age!" Not long ago there is(was) an infective disease --"SARS" which has caused giant panic among countries especially in east Asia. Actually, SARS has caused only less than one thousand people to die, in the contrast, centuries ago some deadly infective plagues in Europe like the notorious “Black Death” had deprived (of) millions of people's lives(恐慌,不是抱怨吧,再说,Black Death 时人们不恐慌?我觉得sars的例子和现代不现代没有多大的关系吧).
Once the whole society is assessed in an objective way without prejudice or other intentions, it is easy to find that society is moving forward all the time. Take the example of human rights, several centuries ago, in North America, millions of Indians were killed by Columbus and his followers. After that President Lincoln manumitted numerous black slavers in the 19th century. In last century women got their right to vote. In science, several centuries ago, people still believe (注意时态) the earth is the center of the universe and created untold fables of stars in heaven. While nowadays people have set their footprints on moon and are trying to land on the Mars. In medical field, during the WWI millions of young soldiers died because of infection caused by bacteria. In WWII the invention of Penicillin prevented this tragedy from reoccurring again.
In sum, we must admit that present society is not a perfect one. However, people are used to exaggerating contemporary problems while neglect(ing) what we have obtained in society is the reason why people complain about present society, but given the choice, no one would like to live in any other times. |
