Name: XX
Application No: XXXXX
Programme: MA in Guidance & Counselling
Dear PolyU Officer:
First of all, I am sorry to bother you at this busy moment. Somehow I am experiencing a really struggling time, I have to ask you for a little favor if it's possible.
The fact is that I received an offer from the University of York in March, but I have still been waiting for yours since it's highly prefered. however, the deadline of acceptance is soon being reached, which is the 3rd of May, I can't take the risk to wait any longer than that. I am therefore writing to please you provide me the result of my application, whatever it is. If it i s successful, I will pay the deposite and confirm the acceptance as soon as I get the offer with no hesitation; if it is not, I can be no longer struggled but accept York's offer and prepare for UK's visa application.
I know it might not be a proper way to place such an enquiry, but I expect your understanding from a student's angle.
Many thanks and looking forward to hearing from you soon
yours faithfully

Dear Miss X,
Thank you for your email.
We understand your situation, however, please be informed that your application status is marked "being considered". It means the admission panel is still considering your application.
As mentioned in my earlier email, short-listed candidates will be required to attend an interview. Announcement of interview will be sent to candidates' registered email one week before the interview session. For your information, several admission interviews have been scheduled from March onwards. If there is no news by early August 2011, you could assume your application to be unsuccessful.
Regards,
angel
Dear angel:
Thank you for such a quick reply!
I can feel that the chance for me to get your offer is quite low through your words. As the matter of fact, I believe all your offers have already been asigned so far, but you need to wait for their acceptance. Once some of them do not confirm the acceptance by the deadline, you may consider the rest of applicants in the waiting list such as me, that is why the status "being considered"may last till early August, am I right?
To be honest, in the very beginning I was recommended to apply for PolyU by one of your current students whose name is XXX, she is studying MA in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Her parents are very close friends of my parents, she gave lots of postive comments about PolyU, and also shared her experience of applicati on with me. I compared my background with hers before making the application, because I am not a risk-taking person. However I found in spite of her score on the transcript, IELTS score and other qualifications+working experience, I am much better, more importantly, I submitted the application in last December, which is 4 months earlier than her. Meanwhile, I daily checked up the information from the forum on gter, there shows the people who have received offers from PolyU and their backgrounds as well, many of them can not even match my conditions, but their applications succeeded.
Angel, I am not writing aganist you but appreciated of your work very much . I am just questioning the admission panel what criteriaI they actually refer to judge whether to approve or reject applicants. I do not understand how come a worse result comes to a better student, that is just not fair.
Looking forward to hearing somethi n g convincible from the admission panel.
Regards

Subject: RE: Enquiries
Dear Miss X,
Thank you for email and informing us your concern for your application status. Your enquiry has been forwarded to the programme leader of MA in Guidance and Counselling programme.
I would like to provide you some information about the entrance requirements for the MAGC and MA in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (MATC) programmes. Although the HK PolyU provides a lot of taught postgraduate programmes, the minimum entrance requirements are varies from programme to programme. The entrance requirement for MAGC & MATC are a recognised Bachelor's degree. As for MAGC, preference will be given to applicants who are teachers, social workers, counsellors or human resources management personnel involved in guidance work or working in relevant areas.
I would like to assume you that the admission panel has followed straightly the admission procedure in assessing applicants for years. I will get back to you as soon as I have a reply from the programme leader.
regards,
angel
Dear angel:
Thanks for your email and passing my enquiry to the programme leader, no matter how my case ends up like, your work and kindness is highly respected.
As you mentioned in the mail, said for MAGC, preference will be given to applicants who are teachers, social workers, counsellors or human resources management personnel involved in guidance work or working in relevant areas. I noticed that on your official website as well, that is why I provided lots of documents, including some offically issued teaching qualifications, to demonstrate my teaching experience and enthusiasm of working in this field in my future career life. I understand that I am not dazzling enough comparing with those who have got many years full time working experience in relevant areas, I have only done several internships as a college student so far, but I be lieve the majority of full time Master Degree pursuers in your campus are fresh graduates, aren't they?
Hong Kong stands for life-long education, applicants with full time working experiences are more welcome to join in your programme, because they would have deeper recognition of what they were going learn, this may lead them to acquire better achievements either in the campus or the society. I absolutely agree with this, and I wish I could have another chance to apply for your course again after having several years full time working experience in the relevant areas if I was rejected this time. However, the chance is rare for females, especially Chinese females. Once I leave the campus and find a stable job, my parents would expect me to settle down and then get married, having a baby...the family will be the most importa nt part of my life, studying abroad will cost me too much like resigning the job, leaving my child and husban d, and that would risk the marriage more or less, of course with no support from my parents. Finally the dream will be sealed in my mind forever, what I have been doing now is to try my best to prevent it from happening.
Angel, if you have the access to view my application files, I please you to let me know which of them is the shortage that caused I am even not qualified for an interview.
Many thanks
Regards

Subject: RE: Enquiries
Dear Miss X,
With reference to the questions that you posed to us, as discussed with the programme leader of MA in Guidance and Counselling, please note that the competition for admission among applicants of the MAGC programme is keen. Thus, academic qualifications and relevant working experiences would be some significant factors for the admission panel members' considerations for admissions.
As explained in my email earlier, the entrance requirements among programmes offered by HK PolyU are varies. For more information about the programme entrance requirements, you may refer to the Study@PolyU (http://www.polyu.edu..hk/study) and select individual programmes.
Again, we would like to thank you for your support to the MAGC programme. We wish you well in future endeavors.
regards,
angel
Dear angel:
Thanks for everything, I think that is it. I have tried everything I can, so have you. I am so sad to take it though.
In the last, just one suggestion I would like to give PolyU's admission team, which is to improve the efficiency of their work so that the applicants can be certain if they are approved or rejected in a reasonable waiting period instead of being mentally tortured by "application being considered", this status can last over 6 months time or even remains no change till the programme eventually begins. This behavior is totally irresponsible for the applicants. Stop saying execuses like "we encounter plenty of applications every year" or something like that. I and my friends applied for many American and British universities, some of them are ranked in the Top 100 in the world, their admission teams always give the results within couple of months, whatever it is Yes or No. I believe they do not encounter less applications every year than PolyU does. Furthermore, they do not charge for submitting applications, PolyU charges HKD 450, accordingly we shall expect your admission team to provide better and quicker services.
I think this suggestion makes lots of sense and is quite reasonable, also I believe that I am not the first applicant addressing such enquiries, or many of them just did not speak out up like I do. I wish you may pass it to PolyU's administration and supervision authorities, since it is avoidless sooner or later.
Best Regards
Yours sincerely
Dear Miss X,
Thank you again for your email and feedback on the admission exercise.
For your information, your comments have been forwarded to relevant parties for their consideration and revision.
Once again, we would like to thank you for your support to the programme offered by our department.
best regards,
