Issue 35no matter what the situation, it is more harmful to compromise one’s beliefs than to adhere to them.
Certainly there is no doubt that perseverance in one’s beliefs is a highly valuable character to ensure his/her success. But by arguing that whatever the situation is, to compromise one’s beliefs is always more harmful (than) to adhere to them, it seems to go to extreme. As a matter a fact, there are many occasions where we would benefit more if a certain extent of concession can be made.
In the first place (不是吧能不能换一个), it is not very difficult to point out that no one can actually eschew such a situation, where (when or that, 反正不是where) his/her beliefs are certain to be out-of-date, ungrounded, erroneous or even absurd (ones)(强,一连串的用词很有力). If he/she has not realized the underlying problems with his/her beliefs, presumably his/her insistence on them has its justification more or less (? However, when anyone else has explicitly revealed the erroneousness or absurdity in his/her beliefs, if that person is still unwilling to revise or abandon his/her stereotypes, then his/her perseverance will not be a virtue, but a vice. Newton stubbornly insisted on(?) his beliefs in(这里才是on) the existence of the God in his later life, no one says that that was in such a great man to do (?). It was also in the same later life, by contrast, that Einstein compromised his belief partly to Bohr that light is made up of basic particles and to some extent absorbed Bohr’s idea that light is made up of waves. What Einstein lost was only an obsolete idea, but he gained a breakthrough in science exploring and obtained people’s respects.
Furthermore, often one’s beliefs are concerned with individual interests(主语不太对头). When this situation occurs, compromise at most times will give rise to an increase in total benefits to both controversial sides. For example, suppose that there is a factory believing that what is most important is to ensure its workers’ employment and payment, but citizens living nearby insist that their health shouldn’t be imperiled by waste discharging from that factory. If both sides stubbornly persist in their belief, never would the solving methods (solving method àsolution) come up and all their benefits (interests?) would be harmed. Instead, if they both concede (acknowledge) the justification of other standpoint and are prepared to make a concession, a more rational and fruitful outcome will ensue.
Justification是justify的名词,应该用unjustifiableness(没有这个词)这种词
Last but not the least, compromise sometimes will conduce to improving (improvement) on original beliefs. In logics and mathematics, there is a powerful analyzing method named apagoge, which means that we can deduce what result we want by analyzing the necessary incorrect results from temporarily giving up original ideas. (例子好,说得不够明白)The effect of compromising one’s beliefs on the improvement of original ideas is similar to this method of apagoge. Through making a temporary compromise and thinking in the opposite direction, we will obtain many useful results unexpected with stubborn adherence, and ultimately help us find the undue in original beliefs, conducing to the proper improvement on them.
In conclusion, despite the importance of perseverance, unduly emphasizing it will transform a virtue into a vice. In many cases, making an appropriate concession is not only useful, but also necessary. (503 words)
