Issue 41.Such non-mainstream areas as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuit play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science.

What role and to which degree did non-mainstream areas as astrology, fortune-telling function in a society has often result in disputation from people since some of them claim that by surpassing human’s inability to predict future and make sensible decision, fake sciences cater for the psychological need of human being while dissenters argue that fake sciences, based on little scientific evidence , act no more than opiate that creating illusions and paralyzing rational thought. In my observation, although I believe that no-mainstream areas do play a part under some circumstances, to go too far to claim that they play a vital role is specious and problematic.

As we may see in our daily empirical observation, when making hard choices or losing their dearest friends or facing tragedy that goes beyond one’s carrying capacity, people turn to those astrology, fortune-telling or psychic pursuit to seek psychological compensation and disengagement. For example, by chiromancy or 通灵,a personal was told that his lost friends can talk with him which greatly and effectively ease his suffering and painfulness. What is more, during period of unbearable natural disaster and calamity, those paranormal pursuits would partially alleviate people’s affliction and trepidation, as is the most case in ancient times when men power were diminished by paramount natural forces. From the above analysis, we should credit those non-mainstream area at lest as a kind of medicine to mitigate mental suffering of people on the condition that no such medicine as panacea exists and no matter how effective it is, overdose would be fatal.

Thus, we would find it weird that even today, a period when modern technology has brought most once unpredicted natural forces under control, people still switch to paranormal pursuit to find shelter and peacefulness for their mind and heart. The reason is that in an age when machines take over most of the job once handled by human, people face the whole reshape of their belief and tenets, they feel that no sooner they surpass natural power than were they trap up in the dilemma of automation VS independence. As a result, some people retreat to their own solemn divine to mediate what is the best choice for their life in a world full of temptation and uncertainty.

The reason that I say non-mainstream areas will never replace science as the vital role-player in the world is as follows. For one thing, actually, even if people turn fortune-teller for guidance in their-decision making process, there is no guarantee that the results would be satisfactory. As a consequence, people find that it is them who have to bear the final consequence of their irrational behavior. The second reason is that if people too often resort to supernatural power, they will lose their own intellect and consequently indulge in mental disorder and mental passivity. What is more, in a modern age labeled with marches of technology into every corner of human life, it is almost impossible to rely on supernatural prediction to decide what our life is going to be. Man has to be the mater of his own life and destiny. Finally, most national curriculum has included illustration of the relationship between fake sciences and sciences in an effort to help students to stick to a principle that it is intellect and ration which account for the ultimate of a particular individual as well as the human being as a whole.

In the final analysis, I find that it is not necessary to banish those non-mainstream areas out of our life since this is deeply rooted in the culture and anthropological development process. What is more, these areas are beneficiary to alleviate some mental sufferings and uneasiness under some circumstances. But I strongly disagree to assert that these areas play vital role human life since it is science that shape today’s society, counter natural disaster and free people from constant fear of instability.
