Should children be given a chance to discipline themselves on the issue of television or movies, or should parents guide their children through such temptations in order to help them achieve better in their study? The heated debate over the education has never been out of the limelight. Among different opinions, I share the notion that the time children spend on television or movies has to be controlled.

First and foremost, even when there are practically no distractions and children can do the required things, most of them still lack the ability to control themselves, let alone when the appealing television programs or movies are out there. Children are soon obsessed with those mass media, and leave their important work behind. Take my ten-year-old cousin Jerry for example. He is definitely a couch potato because even when he in a math class or when he needs to finish his assignments, he seems to think of the cartoons and movies every now and then. Then how about the homework Jerry leaves aside? I can imagine how he stays up late to copy others or he just makes up excuses for his own blank paper. Obviously, Jerry is not the only victim of television programs and movies. It is high time that parents should intervene in and set limits.

Apart from most children's inability to self-control, it is very likely that they also do not have the capacity to distinguish good from evil. Televisions and movies nowadays are crammed with all kinds of content, involving violence and pornography. If young generations are not under their parents’ supervision, the distorted reality conveyed may easily influence the children, causing sadistic impulse and even anti-social behavior. Even if it is not that serious, the adult-oriented programs still greatly affect children's mental health, turning their attitudes gradually into inattention and impatience.

Finally, the effect of television programs is so great that it may form a barrier between parents and their children. According to statistics, communication among family members has largely decreased in recent years. Basically because of the naturally existing generation gap, it is already hard for children and their parents to have a common topic of conversation. When parents find their children always sticking to the television screen and absorbed in the unreal world, families feel even less likely to talk. In addition, watching television too much is said to eliminate people's communication skills, so even if there is a conversation, the television addicts often reluctantly and impatiently throw one or two words back, making it worse for the family relationship. Thus, cutting back the hours of watching television is obviously the most direct way to bring children back into the reality. The precious time previously occupied by the television now can be spent on more valuable family activities, such as going hiking together or having a picnic, in which there are plenty of opportunities for face-to-face communication.

In a word, it is undeniable that television programs and movies are inalienable part of children's growth. However, just because of this, children short of self-control, the sense of right and wrong, as well as communication with their parents are even more desperately required to be properly controlled. It is fairly reasonable for the parents to regulate the time children spend on these recreations for the well-being of their offspring.
