96 "Although, critics who write about the art tend to deny the existence of any objective standards for evaluating works of art, they have a responsibility to establish standards by which works of art can be judged."
96. 尽管那些评价艺术作品的批评家企图否定在评价艺术作品时主观标准的存在,他们
还是有责任建立一套判断艺术作品价值的标准。
I actually agree with the above assertion that although critics tend to deny the existence of objective standards for evaluating art works ,they should build such a kind of standards .Someone may disagree with above notion for they consider art works too abstract to set up a series of objective standards. However, they neglect that most of art works should conform to basic principles of art ;based on these principle, it is possible for critics to set up those evaluating standards.
First, as most of art works are created for satisfying different kinds of people's desires toward art , they must conform to some basic aesthetic requirements, such as being meaningful, beauty , praising for bright things and criticizing for bad things. Many a time common people are not familiar with so many different kinds of art works ; critics try to help people to make clear what is the true value of one piece of art work. Although critics may influence common people's idea towards one work in some degree, they can not put all their own assessments on people, many times people will develop their own ideas toward one work. Hence, that many critics claim that it is impossible for art works to have objective standard as there is no common basis to build those standards is unconvincing.
Furthermore, if critics build up a series of objective standard for evaluating art works ,it will not only benefit most of common people because people will be more easy to distinguish lower-quality art works from master pieces ,but also will benefit the whole art field involving both artists and critics. For common people ,they will no longer be misled by kinds of strange art works which may be harmful and futile . For artists, advanced and reasonable standards may help those tyros to improve their art techniques ; For critics themselves, one objective standard that receive broad agreement will help them put more energy on analyzing respective art works characters instead of disputing for those basic principles .
Finally, the critics have a responsibility to establish standards for art works also because critics themselves are the most suitable people to accomplish the job. Critics are more familiar with art works than ordinary people; they are more perceptive and experienced with of different types of art work than artists . It can be imagined that if the standard was created by common people, master pieces may be considered worthless while “art garbage ” may be regarded as treasures. In the case that those standards were established by artists themselves , it is difficult to have an objective standards for everyone has a tendency to consider his works as the best.
In sum, as different kinds of art have their common nature , it is possible for critics to set up such an objective standard for evaluating art works . Furthermore, once it is set up, it will benefit both common people and the art field also. To establish such an objective and effective standards which art works can be judged on, critics are the best choice who can accomplish the job soundly and competently comparing with others.
