219"Now that computer technology has made possible the rapid accessing of large amounts of factual information, people are less likely than ever to think deeply or originally. They feel unable to compete with—much less contribute to—the quantity of information that is now available electronically."
The advancement of computer technology has made it possible to bombard people at a high frequency with large amounts of factual information. Therefore, it is no surprise that people feel incompetent to process the enormous quantity, having their reasoning ability impaired in this e-age.
Though without intention, computer technology realized the information attack, once unthinkable yet nowadays commonplace. Thanks to the high-density storage technology, thousands of books can be made available within a disk. While it has been much more convenient to preserve documents in the form of databases, other uses of this technology emerged rapidly. Few people take pains to draw, paint and copy fliers; all they have to do is to send a group email, as one click renders hundreds of files with identical contents lying in various e-mailboxes. This practice grew so popular that we have long been obsessed with tens of junk mails with various purposes each day. More than that, there are pop-up windows, banners, flash images, and so forth, all overwhelm our screen within a second. Admit it or not, people have become receptacles of everyday bombardment, whether they are willing to do so.
Thus we fall the victim of the everlasting attacks and eventually let our emotion dominate over reason, which is right to the propagandists’ wants. We are deprived of the time necessary for thorough thinking, yet given one scene after another to instill ideas that may contradict the original ones. Usually people are successfully converted and become frenetic follower singing the same tone, regardless of the truth behind the image. This is the case when we visit the bulletin boards, the hotbed of radical ideas, where the agitated cling to the idea of somebody’s, negligent of human principles. And the same for website commentary. It is worth questioning why some claims by e-news editors against basic human rights are highly exalted by their visitors. Propaganda wins the moment people are stirred up by incitation and give up reasoning, which they could have done to avoid wrongful judgment.
Miserable as the situation seems, I believe there is still one way out. I think being skeptical is of vital importance in this age of abundant information. For issue of any kind, doubt and then decide. No matter how appealing the suggestion sounds, no matter how righteous the statement seems, we should never be predisposed to believe. Only to stand unbiased and to balance opinions from all sides can we preserve our distinct points of view. The massive volume of information will no longer be a headache once we reserve our position and modify it to our own wills. This is the strategy against everyday bombardments.
In conclusion, the development of computer technology has enabled propaganda the means of bombardment, which impairs people’s reasoning ability and conform their ideas to a designed one. Hence the masses should keep skeptical to think on their own, and beware of brainwashing of any kind.
1h35min,严重跑题。
被认为是无病呻吟的一篇力作。还跑题。(ft中) |
