169 "Those who treat politics and morality as though they were separate realms fail to understand either the one or the other."
169． 任何认为政治和道德是两码事的人是既不懂政治又不懂道德的。




In history there once were numerous politicians .Some of them were brilliant gentlemen with high morality ,like Washington, Lincoln ,while some of them are notorious demagogues or tyrants like Hitler and Saddam Houssein. People have debated whether there is close connection between morality and politics for a long time. In my point of view, morality does have some effect on politics ,however, the effect is not as strong as people thought .Furthermore ,in an advanced society people should not count on politicians be all high-morality gentlemen, in contrast , politics should be administered/superintended by legitimate procedures.
   
    Primarily, no one would deny that morality can affect politics and sometimes the impact is quite surprising .  In most of people’s eyes politicians should be higher morality because they have more responsibility than common citizens . People nowadays have more channels to obtain information about politicians especially those scandals ,therefore people are more easier to know about politicians’ morality . If a politician want to make some achievement ,he has to obtain people’s trust/confidence. whether a politician is a high-morality gentlemen or a cheater/liar will inevitably affect his politic career. In history this kind of examples are numerous. For instance, the first President of America -----George Washington who received lasting respect all over the country has high-morality. In his childhood, he admitted to his father that he had cut his father’s cherry tree in spite of be scolded by his father. Even after he has been reelected to be the third president ,he refused to do so for he wanted the USA to be a democratic country instead of one monopoly country. The reverse example is President Nixon, who was forced to resign for his immoral involvement in the notorious Watergate scandal and later deeper affairs.


  However, on the other hand, politics is so complicated that it is affected by many factors except morality . Moreover, many a time the influence of morality on politics is limited ;in contrast, politics is often decided by forces of different parties , propagandas, international and internal crises , and economic conditions ,etc. That can explain why in history there were so many demagogues , tyrants and liar politicians. For instance, Hitler was a notorious demagogue and liar before he became the premier of Germany (the third Reich), however, he succeeded to be the premier because he make use of great disorder at that time and promised to make people live in a better life. Unfortunately, during his tenure he brought the whole world bloody war and great devastation to Germany and other countries.

Finally, since people can not count on all politicians to be high-morality to gain a democratic and free society , restraining politicians’ power through legislating is a wise and effective method and it has been carried out in many countries. Take the Watergate affair for example, after Nixon’s resign , American congress passed several amendments to Constitution to limit the power of President. In some cases ,for the sake of public, even the President can be impeached for his misbehaviors. Years later ,   President Clinton had to receive trial for his scandal with Monica Lewinsky .

     To sum up, politics and morality are close connected ; many a time morality can greatly influence  politicians’ fates. However, since politics is one complex game which is usually dominated by many factors other than morality alone, people should not expect a high-morality leader to bring them happiness. No doubt restraining politicians’ behavior through legislating is an effective means to keep politics in the right way.
