本人新手初上路,求各位投砖:
Doyou agree or disagree with the following statement? If children want to do wellin school, parents should limit the hours of watching TV programs or movies.
Since mid-20th century, television has gradually become a hallmarkand integral part of modern family facilities. Nevertheless, the wide spread oftelevision has given rise to considerable controversy among parents: shouldparents limit the hours their children spend on TV programs or movies? Myanswer is a qualified yes. It is necessary for parents to limit the time theirchildren spend before TV sets to a certain degree although the effects of TVprograms and movies are essentially positive to children.
First of all, parents have the responsibility to guide theirchildren to develop a healthy lifestyle including enough sleep, long-termphysical exercises, extensive reading, active school education, and modest entertainment, etc. The lively TV programs and movies often take the audience’ too much time, and it is especially serious to children whose self-control is relatively weak.As a result, too much time before TV set will reduce physical exercise and leadto an overly sedentary lifestyle, undermining physical health and heighteningthe risk of various diseases like obesity, hypertension and type II diabetes, etc.
Second, as a modern visual mass media, television transmits informationthrough images and sounds, needing less imagination than paper-based media, abeneficial way to the development of children’s imaginativeness and ability ofanalyzing abstract information. The TV programs and movies tend to transmitdirect information. When the children get used to it, they will naturally tendto refuse the abstract information, which is very bad to their development.Without a quality of analyzing huge quantities of abstract information, theirintelligential development will be handicapped.
Negative effects as they have, however, TV programs and movies areessentially beneficial, and therefore they should not be totally prohibited. After all, television programs and movies are both a new kind of media and amodern type of visual art. Their positive effects cannot be denied. The livelyimages and various sounds make the information more attractive and acceptable, which is also a good platform for children to know the world and attain newknowledge which is hardly available in the classroom. Modest time of TV is not only advisable but also necessary.
And most importantly, the TV programs and movies should becarefully selected before shown to children. Merely limiting TV hours overly simplifiesthis issue, and the method of limiting should be combined with guiding. Only inthis way can parents and educators take the most advantage of TV and movies ineducation. |
