We are recruiting PhD students to join the Department of Computer Science at the University of Arizona (UA). Like many other universities in the US, we do not require a Masters degree from applicants to be considered for admission as a PhD student. While we are a relatively small CS department, we are ranked #43 in US News best CS graduate schools, and we pride ourselves on providing high-quality, personalized mentoring for our graduate students. Currently, the department has a ratio of only 2 Ph.D. students to 1 faculty member, and a total tenure-track faculty size of 20.

Our department has numerous focus areas for research, including: algorithms; artificial intelligence and machine learning; parallel, distributed, and high-performance computing; programming languages and compilers; computer security; systems (broadly-defined); and visualization.
All PhD students are fully funded through either teaching or research assistantships that cover tuition expenses and provide a stipend for living expenses.
UA is located in Tucson, AZ. Tucson is a diverse city that is much larger than average college town in the United States, with nearly 1M population in its metropolitan area. Cost of living is also quite reasonable. We have generally warm climates, beautiful desert outdoors, and the fourth most amount of sunshine for any city in the US.  Overall, graduate students enjoy an excellent quality of life.

You will be considered even if you do not major in computer science (e.g., Electronic/Mechanical/Industrial Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, etc.). We, however, recommend that you have taken core CS courses.
