“Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics.”

Does technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics as the speaker claims? There are two claims and I agree with the former claim while strongly be against the latter one. Technologies, the most efficient productivity in the world which take with economic property and prosperous lives to human beings, only influence but not decide social customs and ethics.

Actually, technologies influence customs and ethics to a great extent especially during the last one century, as the development of technologies went fast. Lots of customs and ethics we accepted long ago are no longer cherished by common people now. Because of the fast development of technologies nowadays, the knowledge of human beings is much greater than ever before. So some unwise customs and ethics may be unsuitable for our modern cultures and natural sciences. Even some of them are regarded as wrong ones, and forbidden by new regulations. The status of women is a case in point. Women were regarded as subordinations of men long ago in China. It was their ethics to strictly submit to the rules that were called "San Cong Si De", which included the three obedience: obey her father before marriage, obey her husband when married, and obey her sons in widowhood, along with four virtues consisting of morality, proper speech, modest manner and diligent. Any woman violated these regulations would be seriously punished without mercy. In contrast, we now realize how fatuous it is to unfairly treat women. Women and men are all human beings, and thus should be treated fairly.

However, it is wrong to say that technologies determine social customs and ethics, even though technologies have certain influences on them. As is known that customs and ethics were formed so many years ago, some of which were even formed nearly as early as five thousand years ago. Our human beings are used to most of them and so, technologies alone are hard to decide them. In fact, there are also other factors that may influence customs and ethics beside technological one, such as culture, history and so on. The formation of customs and ethics is a very sophisticated process. Actually, what decides them is people's idealism from one generation to another, not technologies.

Furthermore, social customs and ethics in return have great impacts on the development of technologies. If some technologies were against the base of our daily customs and ethics, they were always forbidden by accordingly laws or regulations. Take the research of human cloning as an example. Cloning itself does no harm to humans and the world, yet human cloning has conflicts with the modern ethics. Some countries claimed that they were strongly against the research done with human cloning and forbid it through certain regulations. Another example may be researches about weapons of mass destruction. Nowadays, North Korea wants to develop the technologies of nuclear weapons and inevitably receives condemns from all around the world, only because nuclear weapons belong to weapons of mass destruction, and do great harm to our human beings and are significantly against ethics.

Therefore, we should know about technologies indeed influence social customs and ethics. But we cannot magnify the function of the influences by saying customs and ethics are decided by technologies. Actually, technologies, as well as customs and ethics influence each other, which no one decides the other one.
