The author claims that when we acquire more knowledge, things do not become more comprehensible, but more complex and more mysterious. This is an obvious paradoxical point for the author just gave a sight of the problem in a superficial way without analysis the problem from the fundamental reasons. As we acquire more knowledge, things for us not only become more understandable, but more complex and mysterious because of the limited knowledge.
As the basic purpose of acquiring knowledge is to help people comprehend the world around us, knowledge is let us people get more enlightened.
While the new born infants are absolutely ignorant to the world, it is the knowledge obtained, as they grow up, that provide with them an insight to the world. Then they begin to know they are the human different from any other animals, they know gradually how they come into this world, and they know they are the very common creatures in the variety of the world. This recognized process of learning knowledge is just the point that knowledge let us become more understandable.
However, the knowledge of the universal is infinite, as the life process of the human is so small compared to the infinite universal. When the things or phenomenon become more understandable, simultaneously they also become more complex and more mysterious. This is definitely happen around us, but it does necessarily mean that we are really become more confused about the world.
The essential question about this is that the knowledge we get currently can no satisfy us to get a further understanding. After more question and problems have been comprehended, the old systems of knowledge can no longer better explain the new problems, which require us have a deeper explore about the new system of knowledge. But our reorganization to the problems is in fact become more through, particular, and access to the true. Take the understanding of the physical material for example. At the very beginning, we know the world is full of variety of materials, and all of them can be divided into molecules without been saw from our bare eyes, which is very mysterious to us. Latter, as the scientific knowledge we learned , we know that the molecule is consist of smaller atoms , but atoms further constituted by protons, neutrons, and electrons. Nevertheless the scientists discovered that there more fundamental matter called quark, which is latter substitute by the string. These discovery render things become more comprehensible to us from the basic constitution. And we also become more confused about the knowledge we get now to understand the division, and we may have a question in mind that how about the next smaller things comprise the string.. The more we get about the knowledge , the more we want to deep explore to the problems.
In fact, it is the knowledge we get that provide a better explanation for the simple phenomenon to human. The process of getting knowledge is the one that deal with the problems.
Without the knowledge to explain the every aspect of the problem and then make the complex problem more complex, there will not be abstraction and recapitulation of a simple phenomenon for us to understand. For example, we now can better understand the definition of the chemistry that is the science of the composition, structure, properties, and reactions of matter, especially of atomic and molecular systems. Such a conception, easily for us to understand, is derived from every complex problems solved and divided.
In sum, the knowledge we get acquire is helping us to become more comprehensible, and the limited knowledge currently about the complex and mysterious will be deeper divide and then give a better understand about the problem. |
