Here's a table showing the average distances in miles travelled

per person per year,which made a comparison between 1985 and 2000.

We can easily see that,in general,the total travel distance has

increased about 30%,from 4,740 to 6,475. This is resulted from the

increase of different travel modes, including car,long distance

bus, train, taxi, and some other modes. Among them, the distance

travelled by car has a dramatic rise from 3,199 to 4,806, almost

accounts for the whole increase by all travel modes. Besides the

modes above, the following three modes have less travel distances

than 1985,Bicycle,walking and local bus.
Perhaps we can make a conclusion that due to the development of

transportation vehicles,more and more people prefer travelling to

farther places, using taxis,long distance buses,trains,and

especially cars.So it's not suprising there's a decrease both in

walking and bicycle mode.
