need help

More and more students are trying to leave china through taking T&G to get scholarship, and most of they guys' major is biochemistry or similar to it. Unfortunately, I'm one of those pitiable fellows who are working in labs. Everyday I make solution, wash and autoclave bottle or instrument, get double distill water, surgery the cute rats or mice, microinject virus in the body of innocent animals, and do recording. It's really a boring life, driving me crazy. Sign, A A A, 5 5 5.  

If I can find other jobs such as waiter, load and unload worker, stocker, and cashier, if I work the same time as I working in lab, I'll get the salary as much as two times of the scholarship. 坏处是下班以后身心俱疲， 倒在床上象跟木头. Maybe I should name me " Mr. Wood."   

At the end of last month, I was laid off. I have no idea about what is lucky or bad, although this job can easily support my life. I have to start new life. With the new experience, expanding my ken, maybe some good things would jump out during my daily work. ( dan yuan ru ci)

You know, my boss is a son of bitch. Only one thing he need learn is not science or how to apply for fund but what is promise and credit!!! Furthermore, he kept all of my applicant files (because he said he was going to help me to apply the technician and graduate student, I had to give him all files). In this case, I can not endure this fucking job untill becoming the student. All in one, I'm failed. I wasted six months.

I'm preparing for becoming a student on spring semester. Maybe I'll be back to CA, because I can pay" zhou nei xue fei" that is fairly cheaper than other states.

Any body living in LA or others, could you give some advices? If I want to change other majors, which one can give me better chances? Which university is easy to be applied? When is the deadline? The fame and scholarship is not the important stuff to me. The most important thing is that I'm still young!!! and I don't care about staying in USA or going back to China . I just want a formal degree and speak English fluently. That's all.

小汉,  我都不知道该说什么好了,  还是先给你说声"加油"吧!  相信一切都会好起来的!!!

专业的事真得不好说, 比如我到现在都还不知道自己要学什么, 所以也给不了你什么好的建议, 但我觉得你还是要搞清楚自己的兴趣先, 毕竟是以后要天天做的事, 如果不喜欢, 那岂不是会很痛苦?

加州这边的学校,  CAL STATE当然比UC要好申请些, 但不同的专业不同的情况也不好说. 至于DEADLINE什么的具体的东西, 建议你还是去各个学校的网站上看看吧. 反正是越早行动越好, 赶紧准备吧!

口语是练出来的,  还是得多说多用,  多和老外打交道;  LA这地方中国人扎堆, 可别和我一样扎进去就出不来了. 呵呵!

说了半天觉得自己也没说出个啥来,   但不管怎么说, 还是希望自己的话对你有点用吧!

Can't agree more! Especially when it comes to biochemistry, you have to be intereted and research-oriented in such field.

If you are still interested in biochemistry, why not try to apply to other schools than that bad apple's lab?

If you want to change major, your major in bachelor degree plays great role. If it belongs to science area, that's kinda easy, but if it's of art one, different story.

Hi,at first, I have to say that I know nothing about biochemistry.And actually I know nothing about the schools in LA, cause I am living in far away from there.But I have a suggestion for you: you said you were still young,right?Why don't you try some field like "registered dietician" or nutrition sth,with such majoy,you will be no problem of English. But whether the future of such majoys are good or not, I'm not sure.At least , it's easy to find a job for an American.

关于口语我同意翠翠的说法，要和老美多说，多问，谈学习之余多向他们学习。把你的意思告诉他们然后问他们这个意思正宗的美语怎么说。次数多了，自然会收获不小。如果天天和国人泡在一起，在语言上和没出国差不多。

小汉，关于生物方面，可能因为我lg是搞这个的，所以平常我听得多点，生物试验，除非到了博士后，有自己独自的能力和经验来设置各种试验，其余的全是重复性boring的工作，尤其是对于technician而言，照你的叙述，我感觉，你老板最早要你去，并不是要收你做学生，也不是要帮你申请成研究生，而就是需要一个technician而已，其实也不要小看这个technician，肯定是需要生物本科毕业的人才能胜任的，我lg的实验室里有些technicians，本来招了一个本科毕业老美是为了帮我lg处理细胞等琐事的，可是那个人总什么都不上心，有几次还因为处理偏差耽误我lg几天没法开始试验，所以后来，每次到很重要的实验时，我lg总是周末跑几趟自己处理细胞。我有时候开玩笑说还不如我去处理细胞，一定认真负责，我lg就说你一定生物基础都没有，是不可能当technician的。另外，我看我lg实验室有些technician在这里做，都是因为本科毕业想继续申请医学院，而在这里弄点工作经验，以及几份好的推荐信而已。
其实说白了，为什么生物方面好申请奖学金，就是因为老美们很少愿意干这种boring的，见效慢的工作，往往都是辛辛苦苦几个月试验做下来，结果因为最开始有个比较偏差的实验结果误导，致使几个月都白费，而且这行竞争很激烈，有时候在就要成功的时候，却发现原来别的实验室抢先一步，已经发出了好paper。那么你做的不会有人再关心，你只能重新另外找突破。
至于老板，我想起我lg常常坚决说他以后不想做faculty，就是因为做老板太累，一天到晚都在写东西去申请各种funding，尤其是还在tenure track的，一边担心搞不到钱，一边还要担心出不了成果，到时候拿不到终身教授就要跑路。我lg的老板还是个M.D & PH.D，她自己有稳定的医生工作，至于成立实验室做实验是因为她热爱搞科研，还是50%+up的时间去四处申请funding，那些只是个PH.D的，所有荣辱都系在实验室的老板更是可想而知，对手下人的压榨更是可想而知。
其实正如你所说，你还年轻，而且看你的个性，并不是有足够的耐心来做boring的试验的人。或许是应该考虑换专业了，其实你有生物的背景，找相关的专业应该比较好找，譬如，如果你去拿个和药学，营养学相关的专业，然后以后到医药公司工作，不是很好？（我不知道啊，瞎说的）
翠翠那句话特别好，一定要搞清楚自己的兴趣，再决定以后的方向。

生物统计就是biostatistics ,主要内容是统计，称为生物统计是因为它的数据主要来源于
医学、生物、环保、公共卫生，等等，区别于金融统计或者教育，保险，工业统计。
目前正是比较热的时候，找工作也容易。如果读硕士，对数学背景要求并不高，但是
想读博士，尤其要想做faculty的话要多花点工夫，最重要的是对数字（数学）有热情。
还是取决于你以后打算干什么。

这个专业的好处是不用下实验室，除了一些数学推导，基本上所有工作都用计算机完成。
博士毕业以后基本不用做博士后什么的，如果不做faculty,可以去药厂的统计部门。加州
UCLA也有生物统计系。

btw:即使是IT行业的巅峰时期，平均利润也没有制药行业高。

小汉，我不知道你的背景，曾经一段时间我以为你是北医的，但现在看来好象不是。

如果你不是生物和医学的背景，又没有兴趣作生物方面，就不要为了上学而在你现在的实验室里作了。专业选择方面还得看你自己的原来的专业和兴趣，不想得清清楚楚也得分析个差不多才成。

喜欢生物统计的话可以申请，但也不要为了工作或别的什么原因就盲目申请。转行学个硕士的话，现在的IT业也许就是明天统计的境况。我现在读的是生物统计，但我想读完PHD，或转流行病学PHD，现在转行学统计硕士的太多了，有点象几年前的CS。。。
