Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Nowadays, various goods are popping up in our society. People start to wonder, what on earth is the main driver of the high sales of those popular consumer goods. Is it the real needs of society, or is it the fascinating advertisements produced by creative and talented business people? According to my personal understanding, social needs and advertising are of equal importance in boosting sales.
I assume everyone would agree with the idea that people do things for a reason, and the "reason" here is an actual need. Commodities like food, clothes, houses, and vehicles are all produced and sold to meet our basic needs. We buy food because we cannot live without food, we buy clothes because we need to dress up for different occasions, we buy house because we need some shelter for our family and ourselves, and we buy vehicles because we need to travel to more distant places and vehicles can help us to speed up. Based on the previous examples, I think it is fair to state that the commodity which best meets our need may have a good sales performance.
Advertisement, however, should not be neglected as well. Supporting by advanced communication technologies and various media, for instance, the internet, TV, radio, magazines, and so forth, the advertisement starts to play an increasingly important role in business. Beautiful posters hanging in fancy shopping malls and television advertisement leading by some celebrity both draw more attention from consumers, and lead the consumers to buy the goods, resulting in the sales going up.
Taking smart phone as an example: sales of smart phone is increased substantially over the past a few years, and one reason should be people's need for a PC-like phone. Smart phone realizes people's idea of surfing the internet at a higher speed, and leaving the heavy PC at home but use a much lighter handset to handle a bunch of paper work. In the meanwhile, the advertisement of smart phone, such as iPhone and HTC, vividly show us how amazing these gagdets can turn our lives to be, greatly encouraging people to buy one. Besides, the brand image that built by these advertisements also contributes a lot in bringing up the sales of smart phone.
To conclude, both social needs and advertising stimulate the high sales of goods. Therefore, the high sales should reflect not only the real needs, but also the power of advertising. |
