Nowadays, there is an increasing curiosity about how successful person becomes success. Everyone wants to become successful, however, only a few of them would reach this target. Some believes that their character or communication skill is the most important factor lead to their success. As far as I concern, it exaggerates the importance of character.

Admittedly, a good character is like a catalyst that can help you succeed faster. Skills of communication make you outstanding among normal people. It is useful because a good character, such as outgoing and energetic, can leave a good impression at the first time you meet someone, who may help you gain more opportunity in the future. However, it is not the most important factor to be successful. Being successful requires numerous factors, as a matter of fact, excluding character there are still numerous necessary qualities.

Hard-working is necessary to success. Just like the saying goes, “Success equals one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration”. Life abounds with such examples, Yu Minhong, chairman of the New Oriental Education Group, said when he first made up his mind to be a teacher who guided students to prepare GRE, he wrote down all the words that would be used in the exam on cards in order to publish a vocabulary book of GRE. Clearly, if he is not hard-working like this, he won’t be that successful today. Yu Minhong uses his own story to illustrate that no pains, no gains.

A suitable method of doing things plays an important role on the road to success. In China, we do not have enough sources of education and consequently not all qualified high school students get the chance to go to good college. As the result of the research published on China Education Journals, only 31% of high school students get the chance to go to colleges which have relatively higher standard of education in large cities. Not to mention the students in rural areas. The cruel truth is you must be better than others in order to get the chance to college. Everyone is doing their best and thus the one who can find himself/herself a suitable method of learning can won the competition. If we define going to a good college as a success, the statement above is a good proof for the significance of suitable method which can make your work more efficient.

If you want to succeed, the ability of learning from failure cannot be overlooked. Failure is the mother of success. Generally speaking, no one can always be successful in everything. There must be failure during one’s life. Actually, failure is a sort of company on our journey of life, even the successful one cannot be excluded. They must be brave enough to face their failure and try their best to get over it and learn from it. If a person who has a delightful personality, an efficiency method of doing things and a quality of hard-working but cannot hold failure, he will not be regarded as a successful one. Imagine, even if he achieved to success in some degree, once he failed, however, he would lost his mind. Will he buck up and do better? The answer is obviously no. That’s why we called him a loser instead of winner.

In a word, a good character is nothing but one of the many factors that lead to success. From my perspective, the role of good personality is overstated. By no means could we overlook the importance of other factors contributed to success.

In the listenning material, the speaker believed that the conclution the author drawed in the passage is questionable.

First, the speaker refutes the reading's argument about that the permission given by Austen's family. He pointed out that Austen had been dead for several years when the permission is made. Therefore the people who gave permission to that portrait probably had not seen Austen before.

Another argument raised in the lecture is that the face in the painting resembles someone in Cassandras's stretch is not a convincing evidence. Because Austen's family is very big, she has a lot of sisters and brothers. It won't be unimpossible that the Cassandra's stretch  is someone else, maybe Austen's sisters or maybe their children.

In the end, the speaker pointed out that Austen is not a teenager when the portrait is painted. Although, the reading passage argues that the style of the painting links to the time when Austen is a teenager, the lecturer gives a more convincing evidence. He argued that the clay used in the picture is sold by a man named William, and he had not come to the place when Austen was 27 years old. Obviously, Austen was not a teenager when the portraits was painted.

To sum up, the lecturer believes that the portrait is not Austen.
