  Biosensors for chemicals of environmental and biological interests

Our group at the University of California, Riverside uses protein engineering
and synthetic chemistry, coupled with fluorescence spectroscopy and fluorescence microscopy
to investigate molecular mechanisms and cell biology related to human health.

UCR is one of the ten general campuses of the University of California system.   
Our research program is ranked in the top 25% among all US research schools.
In particular, Riverside is close to both Los Angeles and San Diego,   
and is a part of south California where a vibrant Biotech industry resides. As a   
suburb of Los Angeles, Riverside is separated enough to keep its safe, quiet   
and affordable environment, but remains an easy access to the big-city life.
The reputation and the location of UCR should put us on the top list for your
consideration.

Currently there are two positions available:


1. Environmental Toxicology: the student will develop a new methodology to engineer
fluorescent protein based biosensors for small molecule toxins and heavy metal cations.
We are interested in molecular mechanisms related to cell redox potential, and toxicity
of cigarette smoke.


2. Biological/Organic Chemistry: the student will use synthetic chemistry methods or
engineer sensory proteins to accomplish the ligh-control of intracellular biochemical
networks. We are interested in kinase networks related to cancer diseases. Strong
candidates with either biological (protein engineering/molecular biology) or synthetic
chemistry background will be considered.


Qualified applicants will be considered for fellowships.
