It has long been a controversy that whether the main role of the university professor is to educate students or to do research. Remarks from students and media reflect that the professors now, not all of them of course, get kind of narrowly focused on scientific or literary research and lose sight of the importance of students’education. While,
personally, I hold the standpoint that professors, who have played a leading role in their research fields, should take their responsibility as a higher-education teacher seriously. I mean both are important, and what our dear professors need to do is to find a balance between the them.

On one hand, “professor”, stands the highest level of a teacher who is qualified
for teaching in a university or a colleage, which, though, an assistant professor or an associated professor or even a lecturer is competent for. We need professors for that we admire their innovations and contributions to a specific research domain and that profound knowledge needs to be spreaded by learned masters. Actually, being an qualified university teacher is by no means an easy job. As I can see during my undergraduate study, teachers should make clearly illustrated PPTs,which is time consuming, have to think about how to make the lectures easy and appealing, and most importantly, make the students who may often play hooky, do learn something from the classes and aviod failing in the exam.
Really tough.

And on the other hand, a professor would mean nothing if he/she only gives lectures in class. So he/she must go out of the classes and do some research, not only to keep in pace with the most advanced ideas, but also to educate the students better. I think a professor, who only provides students with leading ideas on his reasearch frequently, can receive respect from his studendts and fellow colleagues. And for an individual, doing research and publishing the results can improve his own prestige and help apply for some research funds.
all in all, professors, from the nature itself, is a combination of teacher and reseacher, so professors ought to seek for a balance between working as a teacher and as a researcher.

As students, we may be confronted with difficluties when dealing with schoolwork,
which is very common. Most of us hesitate to refer to a professional tutors for we often feel embarrassed asking for help. In my piont of view, it’s not necessarily to be upset while talking to a professor or a tutor. And I hold my argument that we should go to tutors for advice when we meet problems of schoolwork..

For one thing,
professional tutors, if the ones who assigned the schoolwork, can provide you more details about the work assigned, and this is exactly what we need, because diffculties in the work probably resulted from that we did’t catch what the teacher required about the work. In that case, we may ask calssmates for help but without the guarantee that he/she got the requierments accurately. So asking tutors for help is the right direction. They can save you much trouble brought by misunderstanding.

Another situation is that we do know the reqiurements, but have no idea how to start or push forward the work. Under this circumtaances, I think, classmates may be glad to help you, but their advice might not work as much as the tutor’s. The reaon is simple. We are students after all, and the
knowledge and scholarship we have developed aren’t as professional as the tutors. So turning to tutors is a more effective way . And suggestions from tutors may open a new horizon for your schoolwork as well as inspiring you. For instance, last semester, I was working on a paper about the development of lithium ion batteries, a specific field that none of my calssmates has been invovled in. Little chances are that my classmates can give me a single piece of useful advice. So I checked the website of my campus and found a professor who was expertised in this domain. And I got his valueble adivce quite easily, helping a lot with my paper. And if the professor you contacted can’t provide helpful information, he will recoommend another tutor to help you, which is also important.

Fears for the rejection from the tutor? Not necessarily at all. Take my experience as example. Never havet I gotten into that despair situation for the professors are always ready to help.
Believe me that refering to a tutor is the best choice when stuck with a problem from schoolwor.

The reading passage presented three competing theories on the use of settlements of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico in the American southwest. while the professor in the lecture thinks that none of the theories is convincing.

The first theory holds that the Chaco structures were purely residential, with each housing hundreds of people. But if each of great houses has such a large capacity, then
it should have many fire palces , where each family did its daily cooking, while according to the professor, few of them have many fire places. One of the largest structures could only allow only around10 families to do their cooking and
yet ddn't have enough
room for more than100 people. So the primary function of those structures couldn't have been purely residential.

The second theory contends that the Chaco structures were used to store food supplies. It may be plausible. But the professor argues that if these sttuctures were used for food storage, there should be some remains of maize containers or spilled maize. In fact we can find no more big containers or traces of maize in those structures, so the second theory is unsupportive of evidences.

A third theory proposes that the house were used as a ceremonial centers. But the professor think this hypothesis is not supportive either. Because the mound contains other things that don’t come from the ceromonies. The piles of old materials may be discarded
building materials that
wouldn’t be used any more after the construction, and the broken pots may also be some meal trash left by constructors .

In summary, none of three proposed theories is supportive by enough evidences.

110304NA Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The most important problems affecting our society today could be solved within our lifetime.

Our society is now booming at a speed that no one could imagine a hundred years ago. And this fast devoloping rate has aroused increasing concerns about serious social problems, say Energy crisis, population growth, and environmental problems, among which I think the last is the most important and can’t not be solved within our lifetime. It’s not a pessimitic remark, beacause I have some reasons to support this argument.
From the last century, people have been struggling with chemical pullutions and other envrionmental problems caused by human’s overdoing with the nature. Just name one of the most disastrous envrionmental events that happened last seveal decades, the minamata disease in Japan resulting from direct release of mercury-containing waste water, causing thousands of death. Mercury is a piosonous metal that once absorbed by human organs, can cause serious damage to the nervous system. And the released mecury won't decomposed by organism, which can contribute to the long-term remaining of the toxic substance. So one of the reason why these envrionmental problems can’t be solved within our life time is that some factors that cause serious problems will exist in a comparatively long time, just like the radiation pullution from the Neclear Leak of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
And now we're seeking for every possible means to solve or ward off adverse effects brought by social devlelopment, but we should be aware that all the progression of human being are based on the advancement of manufacturing industry, no matter the construction industry, automotive industry, or the comsumer electronic industry. And you can expect millions of tons pollution from these industries, though we have tried to recycle and reuse these trashes. Where there is manufacturing, there is pollution. Casting irons, plating metal surfaces, synthesis of plastic, gas releasing
…… all the processes you can imagine involved in manufacturing industry are pollutable. Any approach to aviod pollution? No way, unless you
cease the development of human beings.
So , environmental problems is one that will linger in the human history, and unfortunately, we can’t see the solvement within our lifetime.

2。15独立作文

In the 21th century, people are dealing with more and more complex tasks than ever, which means that teamwork scales up its role more than the individual performance. In other words, we could be less likely to succeed without teamwork, where critism is inevitable. As far as I’m concerned, critism is a key factor that prompts the progression of a team, while people who cannot accept critism will not succeed in a team. And my reasons are as follows.
First and the foremost, criticism, in general, is a counterview from your parterns or cooperators. They proposed their opposite opinion because they do care about your performance which may be decisive on the whole. And people who cannot accept criticism will be described as overcofident or assertive, which you know, will leave a bad impression on the other mumbers in your team as well as destroying the solidarity. And the consequence is therefore disastrous. No one would be willing to work with a narcissist. You may find yourself isolated and feel lonely in the team. And that’s by no means a sign of success.
Second, people who cannot accept criticism may really miss some important opportunities to improve themselves. As a proverb goes “ Every bean has its black ” ,
and that’s to say every man has his faults. Sometimes we do things in the way we think is plausible, but the fact may be quite the opposite. In these cases, criticism acts as an significant way for us to realise the defects and find strategies against them. And when working on a project, some crucial points may be ignored resulting from carelessness occsionally and appropriate criticism can remind us of these fatal faults. To some extent, criticism is an efficient way to grow up as a qualified mumber, especially for those new comers. Take myself as an example. Last summer holiday, I joined in a research group on organic synthesis, where I had to work with two other partners. In the early period, we quarrelled about the details, and they criticized the feasibility of the approach I proposed.
I took their advice seriouly, finding that I made an obvious mistake. So I changed our schemes immediately, and finally got the expected product.

Finally, in the masses’ viewpoint, acception of criticism is regarded as a key personality for achieving one’s goal. Sometimes, it’s not the criticism itself but the attitude that we view the criticism that matters. Acception of criticism means you have recognised that you’re not perfect individual, and that you have much to be desired. The mentality to pursue perfectness can make you modest enough to listen to every words from no matter your collaborators or your enemies, to learn from them, and thus make it smooth in your way toward success.
In the team, you will never seen a person who is assertive and overcofident popular among the teamworkers. Nor will you see a man who never weigh others’ suggestions or criticism can go far. And I’m convinced that accepting criticism is the inception toward success.
