"In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.

  With the development of the science and technology, our society has called for improving the quality of  instruction at college and university level .In this circumstance ,some one suggests that all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach.Concerning that working experience in relevant professions enables college and university faculty to  offer practical instruction to students, this seems to be  a sound suggestion.
   Since the 19th centuty ,the pace of the technological advancement ,social changes ,and academic progress is so quick that the knowledge contained in the textbooks often lags behind .For example ,the accumulated knowledge about information technology usually increased twice in several months .So  it is common that after the graduation of our students from the university and college ,they realize that the knowledge and method they learned have been out of date,even there are some new method they havenot heard before .In order that our students could grasp the newest thechnology, understand the trend of the science  development,and thus our  faculty should learn these first,our university and college faculty should spend time working outside the academic world in profession relevant to the courses they teach.
   Furthermore ,the working experience in practical world helps the faculty to design their courses more reasonable according to the needs of the professional fields.Through the working outside the academic world ,the faculty will know which of the curricula are more useful for the further career, and which should be ruled out of .therefore ,in the limited four years in university ,our students could master more practical knowledge ,and be more qualified for the needs of society.
   However ,the teachers in some disciplines such as mathematics,literature,history ,and philosophy may find it difficult to combine their teaching with relevant professional fields.This is determined by the nature of these disciplines .In such disciplines ,the faculty should spend much more time in academic world ,so if we also ask them to have professions in society ,it will prove unwise.
   One of important purpose of our education is to prepare workers for the  future society,so it is applicable for our university and college to improve the quality of instruction by the policy that the faculty spend time working in professions in practical world ,but we couldnot make a general decision,we'd better make a balance between work and teaching  and researching  in each discipline   respective.
