I partially agree with the claim that "The surest indicator of a great nation is represented not by the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but by the general welfare of its people", indeed, the general welfare of its people is an important indicator in valuing the greatness of a nation, however, the author seems to overlook the role that its rulers, artists, or scientists play in a nation, which is of equal importance.
Admittedly, the general welfare of the people is the basic condition when we value the greatness of a nation. The general welfare lays the foundation of a country. If most people lives in hungry and poverty, it is meaningless to indicate whether a nation is great or not. Consider Ethiopia, one of the least developed countries. Most people there are still striving for adequate food and clothing, without a bulwark of basic living conditions, there is no greatness to speak of. Thus, we cannot value it a as a great nation. People's high welfare is the premise of a great nation. In addition, the government's major responsibility is to provide people good living conditions. If the major responsibility cannot be finished very well, we cannot say this government is good and the nation is great. Therefore, the general welfare of its people is one of the most indicators in valuing the greatness of a nation.
However, the achievements of its rulers, artists, and scientists are also indicators which is of crucial importance in judging the greatness of a country. Their achievements represent the level of the development of politics, arts, and science. Lacking one of them we cannot define the nation as "a great nation". its rulers' strong capacity and great achievements ensure the well-operating of the national government, which is indespensable to keep the society in harmory. And the aritists achievements represent the cultural development level. And science means the high technology, which plays a substantial role in the development of a country.
Therefore, valuing a country is great or not is multidimensional ,which needs many indicators. Though the CBP (comprehensive national power) cannot value the greatness of a nation accurately, howerver, it indicates that we need numerous indicators to value the greatness of a country comprehensively . The people in Norway live a rich life, but we cannot value Norway as a great country due to its short of science and art achievement. Likewise, Vinus is known for its music achievement, but we still cannot value it as a great country. National single achievement is not enough to judge it as a great country, if one nation want to valued as " a great country", it is suggested that it should improve itself from every aspects.
Summed up, just as Cannikin Law, the nation is the cannikin and the achievements of each aspects are the plates. The cannikin cannot to be an intact one with a shorter plate, likewise, a nation cannot to be a great nation without all-round achievements. |
