74"The most effective way to communicate an idea or value to large groups of people is through the use of images, not language."
Text:
Along with the expeditious social change in this epoch, communication complexity and intricacy are increasing from day to day. Much debate over the issue about the main method of communication has come into vogue. Different people have diverse views due to various personal experiences and distinct backgrounds. Some people advocate that it is through the use of images not language that one communicate an idea or value to large groups of people most effectively, while others sustain the opposition. In my point of view, I would like to hold the standpoint that both images and language plays important a role in communication.
First of all, it is obvious that language is very useful and convenient in our life. In most situations we communicate with others through the use of language. Freud, a famous German psychiatrist, once said (and I paraphrase):" Words have a magical power. They can bring either the greatest happiness or deepest despair, can transfer knowledge from teachers to students. Words enable the orator to sway his audience and dictate its decisions. Words are capable of arousing the strongest emotions and prompting all men's actions..." One can express his or her ideas with language much easier than images. For example, when one goes to a shop to buy a cup, he or she just need to say one word-- cup. On the contrary, if he or she wants to express his or her requirement by the use of images, he or she has to take some pictures with him or her. Clearly, language makes our life facile.
On the other hand, sometimes it is easy for people to understand an idea by vision which is not so abstract as language. Just think of the glyph which some of our ancestors invented and used. Why did they invent and use glyph? One of the reasons is that it is more visual and easier to understand. Another example demonstrates this point, too. When a football coacher deploys a game, he or she usually turn to images for letting every team member know his strategy clearly.
Furthermore, the two approaches-- language and images-- can promote the role, efficiency and effectiveness of each other. Again take the coacher above for example, we hardly see a coacher who merely use images without language when deploying a match. After all, language is briefer. Similarly, we could not see such one that he or she does not use images. Each means is necessary while one communicates with others.
As a result, based on the expatiation and reasons presented above, which can be combined together and thus become more persuasive than any one of them, we can easily draw the conclusion that both language and images are necessary in communication with others. Language makes communication brief, while images make it visual and easy to understand. |
