Thanks to the development of science and technology that today we have many ways of communication including the high-speed electronic communication media such as electronic mail and television. Though some people may not be immediately accustomed to those new methods thus think that they tend to inhibit meaningful and thoughtful communication, however, I believe that they bring us more benefits than disadvantages.
For one thing, as far as the delivery of personal messages concerned, electronic mails have enormously enhanced our efficiency. They save much of our time not only on the way to and back from the post office, but also, in fact more apparently, in the delivering process. They also largely cut down our cost. The two points above are especially true when it matters the long-distance letters. Using the traditional mailing system to send an international letter, it often takes us a few days and we have to pay for the stamps too; whereas an electronic mail may reach the receiver in as quickly as a few minutes and cost us only a few cents for the online charge. A byproduct of this advanced online communication is that it helps protect the environment by using the immaterial Internet instead of natural resource such as wood for paper and gasoline for transportation.
For another, television takes us to an unprecedentedly broad and colorful world of information. First, it offers us the incomparable affluence of content and options. With our time and energy allows, we may watch television and receive all kinds of information all day round for the teemed television programs continuously going on for twenty-four hours. And we also face numerous choices not only of different programs but also different channels from various countries and continents with support of the present satellite and communication technology. Second, we have not gained so much fun from any of the old-fashioned communication media including publications, newspapers and radio as from television programs. They color up the lonely time of millions of old people, drive away the boredom of the serious patients lying in the beds of hospitals and comfort those who are experiencing some kind of sadness in their homes, so that no one may deny the entertainment value of television programs. Last but not the least, it is really helpful in passing on useful information in certain circumstances when normal ways of communication are not available. Lending credence to this point is that the television classes programs during the SARS attack in my city. During the nearly three-month SARS vacation, it is primarily through television that all pupils and some middle school students can continue their classes. In brief, television not only provides meaningful and instructive information but also provides it in a most effective way.
Admittedly, we must also see that on some occasions these new high-tech based communication methods should give way to the traditional ones for their, to some degree, lack of formality, secrecy and depth in thought. For example, many important communications are finalized in writing instead of the convenient electronic mail both in business and official fields such as business contrasts, law suits, invitations for large meetings and governmental files. Moreover, many people insist that newspaper editorials and articles in magazines operate at a deeper level than television programs which they believe somewhat commercialized.
In general, although high-speed electronic communication media, such as electronic mail and television have their own limitation, the imperfectness may not overshadow the great efficiency and convenience they bring us. They, more often than not, contribute to offer meaningful and thoughtful communication. |
