The issue claims that we can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from those contradict our own since disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning. I deem that controversy can restrain learning occasionally, however, generally, it boosts learning more frequently than consent.
To begin with, admittedly, under some circumstances agreement with each others can contribute to learning. The underlying reason might be that a unanimous opinion facilitates people attract attention from each other and talk about the issue they are interested. In another way, when people reach an agreement, the communication becomes smooth and thus could make progress together. Moreover, one can get spiritual encourages and technical cooperation from others if necessary. For instance, Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx have common pursuit, stance. It is their great friendship that makes them to help each other when they were seeking the way to communism. The second reason is that, even if people have identical ideas, their storage of knowledge and the depth of comprehending a problem are always different, for example professor and student, hence, they could learn from each other.(这段主要论述agreement的好处,似乎和首段的观点“争议给学习带来的帮助远多于限制”没有直接的关系,建议放在论述的最后一段,作为对观点的让步——记得开头也点一下。或者,反过来论述:若没有一致的意见,则学习和达到目标的进程会被阻碍。)
Meanwhile, when two opponents dispute on fundamental assumptions needed for meaningful discourse and debate, dissention might impede learning. For example, one believes the god to argue with an atheist the origin of the universe.(建议修改:For example, if an atheist would like to learn the origin of the universe, he had better study the Big Bang Theory rather than turn to a priest, who would be likely to tell him that it is God that had created the universe.) Or one from a democratic country and have a quite rigorous sense of egalitarianism by debating with an Indian who has a large home and amount of land and owns dozens of servants. (建议修改:Or if one from a democratic country with a quite rigorous sense of egalitarianism wanted to know how the welfare of his country would be improved, he or she would not seek advice from an expert on sociology who was from India with a large amount of land and dozens of servants. ) Disputes, lying deep down at the foundation of ones’ values and believes, and those are unsolvable in addressing any issue, are likely to impede the process of mutual understanding and learning.(这些例子只能说明争论了哪些问题,并没有说明这些争论是怎样阻碍学习的。 )
Nevertheless, it is through debate that human intellectual advances at the personal, community or global level. Divergence stress people to analysis their understanding of what they have acquired and then could reform their comprehension of certain things. It is this pressure that promotes the development of human and society. In addition, it spurs us to study more to fill our minds. Take the heliocentric theory for example, it is the debate between proponents of heliocentric theory and those of egocentric theory that makes all of us realize the truth of the cosmos, also, makes the exploring of universe, as well as a variety of satellites, possible, and finally changes the communication of world. Simultaneously, we have a more comprehensive knowledge of the ancient church and, of course, the nature of ourselves.(这个观点很好,我觉得可以稍微稍微展开一下: the nature of ourselves, such as credulity and a limit of perception)
In conclusion, although in some situations disagreement is not that suitable for learning, properly treated, both of them (指的是什么?) can contribute to individuals and society. The key to this problem is to find out the difference and analysis what can be absorbed and absorb it carefully. |
