--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After graduated from XX University, I decided to pursue further study in America. I chose the two years’MFA program of College for Creative Studies.
When I was in Tianjin University, I majored in Industrial Design. Thiscollege education experience helped me build firm foundation of both engineeringknowledge and aesthetic skills related to design, and intensified my interestin product design as well. Since I planned to be a product designer for mywhole life, I grabbed every opportunity to get real-world experience frominternship. I had three internship experiences in three different cities, and Ilearn a lot from them. But one important thing I realized after internships isthat design and business are separated in China. Businessmen don’t understandthe process and the value of design, and designers don’t know how to makeproducts easy to sell. This gap has caused communication difficulty or even conflictsbetween businessmen and designers. But neither professors in famed universitieslike XX University, nor leading companies like the one I took my thirdinternship in, knows how to solve this problem. There are no theories, and nopractice experience. So I feel there’s not much left for me to learn in China, whereproduct design has a history of only about twenty years.
Thinking about learning something related to business, America is nodoubt the first choice. The product design in America is advanced, too. It hasa long history, and many well-designed products are worldwide popular, likeiphone. So I believe that I can learn what I want in America. After chattingwith students and design teachers in America on the internet, I found that theMFA design program of College for Creative Studies had a great reputation. Itteaches students not only design skills, but also thinking methods. It locatesin Detroit, the auto city, and many courses are taught by designers from famousauto companies like Ford or GM. These experienced designers can tell students whatdesign methods works the best in real companies, and also make students able tocatch up with the most advanced technology and market trend. When the dean ofCollege for Creative Studies came to China, I met him and talked about the MFAInterdisciplinary Design program with him. He told me that the origin purposeto start this program is to combine design and business, so students can becomestrategic thinkers and innovators, then take leader roles in today’s globalbusiness environment. I think the focus of this program perfectly meets my need, and I’m also awarded a scholarship of 8,000 dollars a year, so I finallydecided to learn at College for Creative Studies.
Another reason that I want to learn how to combine business anddesign is that, I plan to found my own design studio after about 5 years. Beforethat, I still need to work as a designer in big companies to gain more experience. But in order to communicate with businessmen equally, I have to cooperate withthem, other than be employed by them. Having my own studio, I can refuse thefast but low-quality design cases, and also choose design fields freely. I’vealways been interested in keeping Chinese traditional culture alive in modernsociety, when people today are caughtup in fast-paced environments whether at the office or in school, and abalanced life can hardly be seen anymore. I am hopeful that future generationswould still take advantage of their heritage , so I’llcreate a brand of products in daily use, combining Chinese traditions andmodern design. I hope thoselovingly designed items from my brand, which will be suitable for the modernChinese lifestyle, will encourage people to maintain useful traditions from thepast while building their own style and philosophy of life. Of course, mystudio will locate in China, where the product design market is almost blank, especially the culture oriented design field. The policy in China isencouraging innovation entrepreneurship, too, and many furniture design studioshave succeeded in combining Chinese culture and modern lifestyle. At the sametime, the whole design industry in China is in great need of person who’stalented in design thinking and design strategy, and I’ll be well prepared inthose fields after two years’ learning in College for Creative Studies. So I sincerelybelieve that my career has a bright future. |
