The author of this issue recommends thatthere is a responsible for educational institutions to dissuade students from the fields they are unlikely to make some achievement. Although this claim maybe categorically applied in some circumstances and there needs certain modification, I generally disagree with the author. As a matter of fact, it is tough for educational institutions to dissuade students from pursuing field in which they are unlikely to succeed.
To begin with, whether a man’s can succeed in the future can’t be predicted simply by some standards, let alone perception. It is also hard for educational institutions to define “unlikely to succeed”, unless the definition is just a several terms. In that case, for example, if a student got a GPA higher than 3.5, or published two articles in journal, or wins a championship in some scholar competition, he will succeed; others will be labeled “unlikely to succeed”. But as a matter of fact, only the minority of students show their great talents during schooling, while the majority, show their capacity through a long period of time, even half a century. This works especially on many scholars and artists, who strive for a breakthrough in their fields for decades, such as Qi Bai Shi, the most famous master of traditional Chinese painting, becoming well-known when he was 60.
What's more, to some people, their motivation of researching and studying is interest of some particular field or something rather than pursuing success. To them, success and fame are just dispensable byproducts when pursuing their dreams. James Cameron, one of my favorite directors, is always chasing his dream. He loves sea, and he filmed Titanic. He loves adventure, so he built a submarine and dived in the deepest abyss in the world. His reputation is along with his pursuing what he loves, but not what so called "success". If he just wants to succeed in some way, I really doubt whether he can film this touching movie and explorer the extremely dangerous place with no profit or benefit atall.
Meanwhile, a person has the right to decide his own activity, but not replaced by parents' or teachers' wills. It is unacceptable for educational institutions to discourage their students from what they're not good at right now, while encouraging them to choose the field by themselves is strongly recommended. The right to choose is the responsible to take. In another word, when a student chose the field he likes to study, he will strive to accomplish great things. After the choosing, it is an important role of guide educational institutions play to help students succeed step by step in their fields. By doing so, confidence, strong mind and integral individual can be implanted ingrowing students, which are far more crucial than so called success.
In the final analysis, it is recommended to educational institutions that encouraging students to choose the field they like and take responsible for themselves, but not dissuading students from where they are unlikely to succeed. The most important responsible of educational institutionsis leading and building an integral individual for their students. |
