issue 115还有一个星期就考了,帮忙看看吧
115 "It is through the use of logic and of precise, careful measurement that we become aware of our progress. Without such tools, we have no reference points to indicate how far we have advanced or retreated."
Is it through the use logic and precise, careful measurement that we become aware of our progress? The speaker claims so. In my view, while I concede that the use of logic, precise, careful statistics is an important way to measure our progress, I insist that there are still some other aspects of progress that can't be measured by the logic and precise, careful tools, especially the progress of the whole human being.
Admittedly, in the field of science, and some field of politics, the precise statistic is always what we intend to get and is an important measurement when assessing certain aspect in given field. Using the value of GDP to sign the level of living, using the achievements of science to embody our ability to control nature, using the number and power of weapons to present the military strength of one country, anytime, insofar as we assess certain subject, we base our argument on some statistics.
However, in the fields of art, and some other fields of politics, any attempt to find a specific measurement is predestined to fail, though the precise statistics is indispensable in them. Take the music for example, compared with past, there are more works of songs, orchestras, and even they may sound more euphonious (euphonier) for contemporaries, but you can't assert that the music of today has exceed that of the past, because different ages have different values, perspective of beauty, and spirits of times, all of which can change their favors, and we shouldn't and haven't the power to use our measurement and feeling to decide which one is more advanced or worse. Thus, the number and feeling represent little sometimes
Moreover, development of society, as a whole, is difficult to be assessed with the enhancement of only one or two fields which, as many people think, have experienced progresses. For example, it is undeniable that people have made a great progress of science comparing with the past: more disease can be cured, people land on the surface of the moon, more supply of food is afforded, nevertheless, at the same time, facts such as the increase of criminal rate, the menace (manace) of nuclear war for human life, and more serious environment (invironmental) problems, prevent us from believing that we have got an enhancement.
In sum, though the precise, careful measurement is indispensable for any measurement, and even in some fields, can be used as the most important measurement, the author overestimate its uses that can be applied in any field. |
