203. "The best way to understand the character of a society is to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its heroines."

When we seek the best way to recognize the character of a society, some people think that it is best to examine the character of the men and women that the society chooses as its heroes or its heroines. Though heroes or heroines can stand for some parts of the society, I think it is not a best way. By considering both the heroes or heroines and the populace, we can get a full understand of the character of the society.

It is true that by examining the character of the heroes or its heroines chosen by the society, people can understand some parts of the character of a society. Because usually persons chosen as heroes or heroines of a society are bound to have contributions to some of great events which can be the good examples learnt by ordinary people, or inbody the values that the society perpetuates. We can see multifarious examples in the age of renaissance in Italy. In the realm of painting, Da Vinci was seen as one of heroes because he made contribution to the society by creating lots of works. By examining his works like the smile of Monalisa, we can learn that society in those days was calm and people enjoyed good lives.

However, heroes or heroines can only stand for some parts of the character of a society. How do people seize some others? We should not neglect the effect of the enormous populace make on examining the character of a society. For example, varies of societies have their own different kinds of cultures as well as own national spirits. What is the body of such cultures or spirits? It is the ordinary people. People in China have spring festival by contrasting the people in some western countries considering Christmas to be the most important festival. People in China hold the opinion that hard working is the national spirit because it is Chinese hard working people who created the miracle, the great architecture, the Great Wall. Whereas American people deem liberty is their national spirit because they are proud of the liberty of statue and their pursuit of freedom, their fighting for freedom. Thus, the populace provide some other respects of the character of a society.

Additionally, in order to gain a full recognize of the character of a society, we should analysis both of the two aspects, the heroes or heroines and the populace. Because if we only examine heroes or heroines, our work will be not complete. But if we only examine the ordinary people, sometimes they are not representative and the number is too large. Moreover, though the heroes or heroines are chosen by the society, some of their behaviors cannot reflect the character of the society. For example, though President Clinton is considered one of the heroes in American politic history, almost everyone knows his scandal in his private morality. That is to say, we should not take things like this into account when we examine heroes or heroines to understand the character of a society.

In sum, we should balance the process of examining the two parts, which are made into a society, the heroes or heroines chosen by the society and the ordinary people. Through this way, I think, people can get a complete understand of the character of the society.
