Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? The main purpose for people who have jobs is for money rather than social status.

I think the conclusion that people who have jobs are mainly aim to get money rather than to make access to higher social status is drawn too hastily to convince me. Admittedly, we are living in a world where many people increasingly worship the materials and money, however, the purpose of work actually differs from person to person according to individual condition and even their own interests.

It is well known that for people all around the world, subsistence comes first, other individual demands come second, and the latter aims to improve the former. So for some population, such as the graduate or people who are still struggling to get rid of poverty, making money from their jobs to satisfy their basic living requirements might be the first thing that should be taken into consideration. After all, which one are they likely to choose between a good dinner that can appease their hunger and a desirable title that cannot improve their plight immediately? I think the answer is obvious. Moreover, in our material society, the twisted “money first” values make people pursuit money unreasonably, selfishly and greedily, directly leading to the ignorance of other important meanings of our lives, such as honest, tolerant and responsibility.

However, when people are no longer painstakingly worried about their basic living insurance, they might go to work for the demands in second step, such as seeking the social status mentioned in the statement. Higher social statement could provide people with not only more respect from others but some certain powers which have considerable influence on others lives. I concede that the mercenary people might seek benefit for their own by taking advantage of these powers, in this case, the higher social status just in turn serves the lust for money. But this opinion is kindly taking a part as a whole with the fact that there actually are many people who would like to be in high social status simply for the purpose of improving the living standard of public with the help of resources in their hands because they have went through the hard days and understood the helpless feeling ever confused them.
  
Moreover, there are many people who got a job just for their interest or faith which is irrespective with either money or social status, such as the outstanding war correspondent Marie Colvin, who have dedicated her whole life to unveiling the truth happened in modern war. Impelled by the faith of telling people exactly what happened in the war, she always appeared in the most dangerous front-line regardless of her own safety. Although people like her are too few, I believe just thanks to them, our society become more beautiful.

In sum, people with different conditions and faiths have their jobs with totally different purposes. So we should not make partial comparisons according to our own experience or the people around us.

Movies and television have more negative effects than positive effects on the way young people behave.

Almost every young people has ever obsessed in some plots or admired some certain roles in movies and television programs, and sometimes they even have the fantasy of being someone just like the heroes in the story. So it is undoubtedly that movies and television have enormous influences on their behavior and even their values. For a long time, there is a hot debate about the impacts on young people from movies and television are positive or negative. As far as I am concerned, with the backdrop of worshiping of justice and advocating of virtues in our contemporary society, the advantage of movies and television outweigh their disadvantage on young people’s personal quality and their ability to deal with problems.

At the first place, in most movies and television, the roles which are popular among young people generally have the same good characteristics, such as strong body, courage, honesty or responsibility. Being imperceptibly influenced by what they constantly see and hear, the young would unconsciously behave just as the people they admire. For instance, thanks to the movie star Schwarzenegger, thousands of hundreds of young people poured into the gym with the hope of building a strong body which obviously benefits their health a lot by freeing them from video game or computer. And some mentionable movies, like <The pursuit of happiness > and <Beautiful mind>, have inspired the young with the courage facing with hardships, the faith of “nothing is impossible” and the responsibility for their own decisions. I think these vividly examples which are intentionally glorified by the conductors with precious virtues can never be replace in educating young people.

At the next place, a majority of movies and television are set in our real world which could directly widen the sight and knowledge of young people and enable them to learn from what happens in the screen. For instance, when the boil water extinguish the fire from natural gas, the first thing should do is to turn off the switch of gas pipeline; when the things in pot were on fire, the best method to put out the fire is covering the lid; when people happen to be in the scene of fire, they should immediately low down their body or mantle their mouth and nose with wet materials. All of these played in movies and television that often happen in our daily life are valuable teaching materials for telling the young people how to deal with these emergent conditions.

Admittedly, today violence and sexy are frequently exhibited in movies and television which really have bad influences on physical and psychological development of young people. However, with increasingly awareness of this harmful things and constant propagation of traditional virtues, I believe these problems will be prevented and solved successfully.

In sum, movies and television have irreplaceably positive impacts on the way young people behave which outweigh some certain negative ones.

All university students should be required to take history courses no matter what field they study in. Do you agree with this statement?


Some people complain that history courses are so tedious and useless that it is totally wasting precious time on such obsolete and antiquated stories. However, I stand on the opposite of this argument, because under the surface of constantly change of our world, there are some salient properties of human seem to be permanent, and also because the outstanding people in the long courses of human history never stop inspiring us to move on to further accomplishments.

The understanding of history could enable us to know what happens in our world more insightfully and profoundly. With so many shocked news about wars or slaughters reported on TV or newspapers every day, we cannot help asking why these still happen when our world seems to be more reasonable and civilized, and we might also be curious about where will they go with so many complicate situations. I think the answers would be well revealed by studying of history: some certain human nature which also is the roots of these problems could never be changed, such as the persistent pursuit of freedom and the greed for wealth and power. From American War of Independence to Emancipation Proclamation, from the struggle against apartheid in South Africa to feminist movement in the world wide, all these facts, all these histories are manifested that the willing of freedom can never be suppressed and the inhumanity tend to take every opportunity to revive, yet the most important is the former always overwhelmed the latter.

It is well-known that the rich and colorful history presented in front of us today is composed by distinguished people in different fields who play important parts in the development of our world. Then no matter what the students majored in, no matter what they are interested in, the history could always prompt and inspire us with so many impressed examples. On the one hand, the valor and determination of Napoleon, the diligence and endeavor of Newton, the courage and fortitude of Beethoven, and the creativity and persistence of Edison, all of these showed us the indispensable characters which are gates to success, and I believe what the students learn from these historical figures will serves them for life. On the other hand, the various kinds of history courses, such as art history, architect history or culture history, undoubtedly benefit the students majored in this field a lot by understanding of the development of their own specialized subjects.

Admittedly, if the teacher just mechanically listed the history events on the blackboard, and we just crammed for our history exams, the history courses really lost their authentic value of reference and inspiration, so the most immediate problem should be solved is studying them in the right way.

In sum, studying of history does not simply mean learn what has happened by rote which is actually nonsense, and in this case, it is totally unnecessary to setting up history courses. However, when we are willing to analyze and summarize them by heart and when we apply what we learned from them to study and work, we will ultimately get access to preeminence.

It is better to spend money on traveling and vacation than to save money for the future.


Owe to the quiet different consuming conception and philosophy of life, some people argue that only if money was constantly spent on something that make your life both colorful and full with excitements, such as trip or vacation, could its value be presented; others holding the opposite opinions might believe that life is a long trip, we should be completely ready for handling thorny issues at any time with things prepared previously, such as the money saved before. I think both of them make senses because a beautiful life is established on the unforgettable enjoyment you have when everything is ok and the assured security when misfortune happens.

It is undoubtedly that spending money on traveling and vacation is entirely worthy for what you can get from these experiences might serve you all your life. Firstly, the beach and sunshine, the breeze and beautiful scene could make you free yourself from the tedious and onerous work, totally relaxed, and replenish you with inexhaustible energy which is indispensable for your comeback to work. Secondly, traveling and vacation could provide you with plenty opportunities to make congenial friends. I believe we all have the experiences of playing and chatting with many strangers on the train to our destination, and it also often happens that you might go in company with someone that has the same trip plan. However, if you spent all you have on these enjoyments, something unexpectedly happens might caught you on the wrong foot. For example, treatment of the major disease found incidentally, buying the unscheduled expensive devices that you would be unable to do without, or offering economic help to your intimate friends, all of these need money saved in your bank account.

The habit of saving money to make preparations against a rainy day is quiet reasonable and sensible, because we live in a world changing constantly and we never predict what will happen next. With the money for emergency, you might live with more security and insurance. Take two friends of mine as example. One of them is a totally hedonist who almost travelled around the world and tasted all the tasty foods in different countries in his spare time, without a doubt, have no money in the bank. The other used to save for the future, even if it means doing without something that is desirable now. When the economic recession comes in 2010, they both join the army of unemployed. Without any deposit, the former lived a completely down and out life while the latter went through this plight peacefully with the help of money he saved.

In sum, with their pros and cons, we might feel confused about where to turn. I think the best solution might be weave them together to make our life both colorful and smooth, spending a rational portion of money on enjoyment, such as travelling and vacation, and saving a little money against unexpected needs.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement patient is usually not a good thing, we should take action at once.

I totally cannot agree with the statement because patient is essential to our success, such as to make a plan thoroughly comprehensive, to accomplish it as meticulous as possible, and to keep composed when we are facing with thorny problems. Admittedly, sometimes taking action immediately would impel us to grasp the opportunity to transfer some creative idea hit us into practice. However, even if some immediate action could bring us with a good start, I still believe patient is prior to it because patient plays positive role in the whole process including the beginning, the development and the end. Besides, it often happens that a good plan was completely destroyed by jumping into action too hastily without patient.

On the trip to success, we often encounter plenty unexpected problems that often cannot be simply neglected and we have to figure out some solutions patiently. For example, on the stage of making a plan, data collection, drawing lessons from predecessor’s experiences, having our own sketch on the basis our current situation, all of these preparation works cannot be completed in one move, what we need is not reckless beginning but patient analysis and summary, just like the old saying goes, well begun is half done. In the course of implementing our plan, patient is even more indispensable. We have to analyze the reasons leading to the matters carefully, and in order to move on, take some steps to fix them patiently. If Edison has no patient, the bulb would not come into our life after thousands of failure; without the hard and patient work of Yuan Longping, the father of hybrid rice, our yield of rice can never reach a higher level. Even the end of a plan has closely relationship with patient. It is well know that a fine starts but a poor finish will keep us from success. It often happens that we take actions with enthusiasm, yet the passion fade due to setbacks in the process, and finally we give up.

I think impertinent understanding of patient leads some people make comparisons between it and immediate action. In fact, they equate patient—the key of success, with procrastination—the root of failure in the wrong way. Undoubtedly, the latter make us stagnant with the daydream, keep us sluggishly from solving the questions that we have raised. To be patient might also cost some time, yet it is not aimless but paving the road for good beginning, handling the problems without starting over both of which actually save your time and make good play. As the old adage says: if you don’t have time to do something right, how will you find the time to do it again?

In sum, although I stand that patient is prior to immediate action, there is no denying that taking actions purposefully and ambitiously would also benefit us a lot. So the significant problem need to be handled might be make a good combination of them. Taking actions without hesitation after thoroughly planning and dealing with the problems facing us dispassionately and patiently are the stepping-stones to success.

Some jobs can pay high salaries but require employees to leave their family and friends. Some jobs pay few salaries but allow employees staying with family and friend. Which job do you prefer? Why?


Some people argue that the love of family and friends are prior to everything in the world, so they would not leave their home town for higher salaries. On the contrary, I would prefer the job with higher payments even at the cost of living in a totally strange city alone because I believe the distance has no impact on my communication with our family and friends with the help of advanced technologies and convenient traffic today, also because job with higher salaries could improve my living level and even my professional career.

Firstly, I totally agree that family and friends are indispensable parts of our life which make our life colorful and happy. However, I think the distance will not do us apart or make us alienate from each other just like some people would like to worry about. We could talk about our grief and happiness at any time anywhere through telephone or mobile phone conveniently; we could hold a little family meeting on Internet with all members in front of the computer to discuss the thorny problems we have confronted; we also could share our pictures on Flicker or Facebook to know the recent situation of each other. With the communication of these details in our daily life, it feels like we still live together. Moreover, the efficient traffic enables us to meet in several hours which might not much longer than the time we wasted in traffic jam when we lived in the same city.

Secondly, higher salaries will undoubtedly provide us with firm material base and improve our life in several respects. On the one hand, with a continuously rise in price, higher salaries will maintain our life in a relative stable level without worrying about how to pay the rent of next month. On the other hand, we might have extra money to do what we are longing for. For example, one of my friends travelled around the world and tasted all the tasty foods in different countries with her higher salaries. Another who went to the west of our country with the higher payments as twice as he obtained previously, kept donating money and daily necessities every month to the HOPE elementary school. In other words, the enjoyment we get from higher salaries not only materially but also psychologically.

Finally, in my opinion, the reason of setting a higher payment for a job is most probably because no one are willing to take the job so that the company must use high payment to attract people to. In this case, who take the job might be considered as a positive employee and gain recognition and appreciation from the employer, naturally, following the opportunity of promotion.

In sum, I think in our contemporary society, the advanced technologies facilitate us to keep closely touch with our family and friends, so the job with higher salaries and requiring us to leave our family and friends will definitely benefit us a lot.
