Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: the car has had greater effect to society than the airplane has to.

I think we cannot hastily make a comparison between the effect to society the car had and that of airplane, because in different conditions they presented different advantages respectively which are both indispensable for our daily life.

Admittedly, we cannot live without cars which has infiltrated every facet of our daily life and the society cannot function properly and orderly because almost every social department rests on the land transportation of cars. In other worlds, the car indeed has considerable influence on our society and our daily life. On the one hand, think about the things we have done with the help of cars every day. We commute from home to work and sent our children to their kindergarten or element school by cars. Then we might drive to meet our clients for business from one side of the city to the other. After work, you also cannot shopping or having a good dinner in downtown without a car. It looks like that the car has been our “accelerated legs”, one completely necessary part of our body. Even if you don’t owe a car, it is also closely interrelated with you and serves your life, such as the public bus, the taxi, the mail cars and so forth.

When it comes to airplane, the first thing hit your mind might be “the quickest mean of travel”. The speed of airplane actually makes it outweigh cars in several conditions. Firstly, the quicker the vehicle is, the more time you will save. For example, from Beijing to my hometown Yantai, it will take me more than 8 hours by cars while only about 3 hours by airplane. Secondly, airplane can almost arrive at anywhere throughout our world which is also significant and incomparable character of it and benefit us a lot. For instance, it is undoubtedly impossible from China to American by cars with the ocean between the two countries, at this case, it is more reasonable to take the efficient airplane to save your time and energy. Take another example, a few hours after the occurrence of Wenchuan earthquake, because of the seriously damaged land traffic system, the victims cannot leave the area and the rescue team cannot enter as well. Thanks to the airplane, these thorny problems successfully solved and thousands of people survived the disaster.

In sum, we cannot draw a general conclusion about which is more important to our society between the car and airplane because each has its merits. What we should do might just choose the pertinent vehicle to satisfy the need of different situations.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: it's more important for the government to build new housing than preserve old and historic building.


The removal of old and historic building often hits the headline and causes a hot debate that which is more important to our society between developing the city and preserving the culture heritage. I think in our contemporary society, the city construction should be put on the prior place, not only because the new skyscraper could save our precious land resources, but also because it can bring us with more comfort and convenience than the old and historic building.

I believe no one would doubt that the old and historic buildings are often low storied ones that could not meet the need of housing for the sudden increase in population throughout our world. Nowadays, people poured into big cities to seek the opportunity for their career and to enjoy the better life. Because of the space limitation, the best methods to deal with the “population explosion” might be more usable floor area on the same land, which directly resulted in dismantling the old and historic buildings. Moreover, the cost of maintaining the old houses, such as repair and protection, is a considerable and onerous burden for our limited budget, for a long term, which might even exceed the expense of building a new one.

Another has to do with my agreement is that the new buildings that was constructed with the help of advanced technologies are more substantial, convenient, comfort and sometimes even could be the new way of conserving energy. For example, the new buildings are strongly built by the modern heavy machinery they would keep up even in a violent earthquake. And the central air condition systems almost established in every new buildings today, which not only save the cost of heating and cooling but also prevent the incidence of some diseases, such as carbon monoxide poisoning. In addition, with the prevailing awareness of environment protection, many architect have designed the environment friendly buildings which could decrease the consumption of our limited resources by using solar energy, some even could generate some energy to satisfy themselves through the process of garbage disposal.

Some people might argue that the old and historic buildings are precious culture heritage of a country which is non-renewable and irreplaceable so that the new buildings should make way for them. I concede that some old and historic buildings could also bring us with profits with the wanderlust worldwide, and some have significant historic meanings for one country or one ethnic group. Therefore, the best attitude should be striking a balance between the new buildings and the old one, that is to say, preserving the representative old and historic buildings and properly constructing the new ones.

In sum, I believe, in our society with population and energy problems, building new houses is more important than preserving the old ones, however, the old and historic buildings which can benefit us economically or culturally should also be protected.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement. People who cannot accept the criticism from others will not be successful at working in a group.

One significant character of the people who cannot be open-minded to criticism from others is that they always believe in themselves without considering other’s opinions. On the contrary, what is highly emphasized by team-work might be shared goals and unity of action. Obviously, the believing of self-righteous people and the spirit of team-work are on the absolutely opposite point, that’s also why I think people who cannot accept other’s suggestions and criticism would not perform well and be compatible with the whole team.

If the person who cannot accept the suggestion and criticism from others is a leader in the team, it often happens that the work would not be accomplished smoothly and successfully. It is well known that the salient advantage of team-work might be put people’s heads together to find ways to go through the difficulty. The first word should be highlighted is “together”. I believe the conceit leader would not favor this word which means to take opinions from others into consideration and sometimes even to make some concession to achieve an agreement. Take a commercial company for example. The capacity of observing the constantly changing society is limited for one person no matter how competent he is in this field. In this case, integrating different observing outcome from different people into a relative comprehensive and complete image is totally necessary and would benefit the process of making decisions a lot. However, the leader who insist on doing something in his own way often are unable to attend to anything at one time resulting in the failure of the project as well as the trust and satisfaction of other people in the group.

Even if the person who is full of himself is just an executive member in the team, his conceit and arrogant will do harm to the entire group as well as himself. Generally speaking, for a whole team, there will be a general guideline to conform. On the one hand, it often happens that the person who cannot accept criticism from others and just stand on his own point and do what he think is right, which would directly bring mangy thorny problems for the team to remedy, and sometimes even thwart the whole process. On the other hand, the conceit people often are isolated by others due to their arrogant attitude which not only be harmful to his interpersonal relationship but also decrease his opportunity to promote.

In sum, I believe that the person who is not likely to accept opinions or criticism from others would not easily integrate into the team and cooperate with others, sometimes their participation would disturb the original plan or even ruin it.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: it is impossible to be completely honest with your friend.

Some people argue that the true friend is the person with whom you can completely share your secrete, your sadness, fear and happiness. However, throwing our mind back to all the scenes of getting along with our friends, we will find that it is really impossible to be entirely honest with them, sometimes due to certain privacy that we do not want to tell others or the hope of maintaining the friendship, and sometimes just because of the responsibility for work.

There is no denying that everyone has something secrete that don’t want to share with others. In this case, when it comes to these privacies, we might intentionally swerve the topic or even lie to our friends to dissemble our panic or fear of talking about them, which might derive from the strong willing to be considered as perfect. For example, many people do not want their friends to know about the mistakes they have ever made in afraid of being belittled; some children keep their secrete, such as the divorce of their parents or the love to some girl deeply in their heart because of worrying about the scorn from their classmates; as for me, I have used to conceal my sadness by pretending to be happy almost to everyone around me, with the fear of exposing my weakness.

Besides hiding our original selves, the dishonesty to our friends is some means by which we are attempting to maintain the friendship. Take something went on around me for example. One of my friends had a crush on his best friend’s bride. Although, at the wedding, with the feeling of desperate and agony when he saw the couple exchanged the rings after vows, he still gave his great blessing to them with smile. He knew that once he told the truth to his friends, what he lost is not only the trust but also their friendship. Thus he chose to be dishonest to them with his best wishes.

Still another point which is easy to be neglected needs to be taken up here, some special information involving commercial confidentiality or national security undoubtedly cannot share with our friends. Disclosing this sort of information will have great harm to the destiny of a company or our social stability, then, on such matters our lips should be sealed even to family members, let alone to our friends.

In sum, it is really impossible to be totally honest to our friends, what we should do might just be, in some appropriate conditions, trying our best to be.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: the ability of adapting to new environment is more important than excellent knowledge for job.

In our workplace, there always are some people can integrate themselves into the new work environment and get familiar with the colleagues immediately, also some erudite people throw themselves in to the work but are isolated by others due to bad interpersonal relationship. In my opinion, both of them have the key factor for reaching great achievement, yet neither of them would complete that, because the ability of adapting to new environment and the excellent knowledge for job are both essential for promising career and neither is dispensable. That’s also why I cannot agree with the statement.

In the short term, adjusting to new environment as soon as possible could lay a firm basis for further work. Firstly, good social skills would bridge the gap between a new man and the old workers which might enable us to know the environment quickly. When we have a chat and joke with the old workers, we might get a lot of helpful information about the working process, employee’s welfare, the restaurant or 7-Eleven around the company, sometimes even the habit or penchant of the manager. Secondly, with the good interpersonal relationship, we will cooperate with others smoothly and successfully. People are more likely to communicate the opinions or suggestions and to share their precious experience which would definitely benefit us a lot. Thirdly, the adaptive capacity is one of the important characters valued by employers, one character that might make us stand out of the crowd and obtain appreciation from the authority. However, the people who are only busy with social interaction without any achievement would be considered as specious.

In the long term, the excellent knowledge and working ability seem to play more important role in career, such as self-confidence and promotion. On the one hand, in the workplace, people who have the true talent and learning always are admired and respected by others, which would help establish the confidence for himself as well as a prestige in the company. On the other hand, no employers would like to hire someone lacking work ability, and the outstanding work performance would draw the authority’s attention, which directly contribute to the promotion. Yet without good interpersonal relationship, the people would be crowed out by others and sometimes even be defamed or framed.

In sum, we should not hastily draw a conclusion that which is prior to the other between the adjusting capacity and the excellent knowledge because they are both indispensable in the development of our career.

Do you agree with the following statement: young people nowadays have no influence on decisions that determine the future of the society as a whole.

It seems that important positions in the governments of different countries have one same character that they are only open to the aged and experienced people. Admittedly, young people are still learners in most field, their limited authority and influence keep them from directly participating in the process of making some significant decisions about one society’s future. However, as the main work force maintaining the normal function of our society, their attitude, value and ambition have considerable impact on the stability and development of the society, which indirectly guide the important decisions.

Throwing our mind back into the young people we were familiar with, almost all of them just have done some fundamental work with no power of decision or influence on others. I think it is totally understandable and reasonable to keep them from directly making some important decisions determining the future of the society as a whole because they lack the relative knowledge and experience which are indispensable for handling the thorny problems, also because of their comparative weak responsibility for the whole country, and their aggressive quality and immature philosophy of the world or of human life. From this point, I actually agree with the statement that the influence of young people on decisions with regards to our society’ future are not worth mentioning or even absent.

However, the normal running of our society are maintained on the basis of every achievement of fundamental work that are generally accomplished by the worker of basic level which mainly are comprised of young people. Then their working attitude, ability, and sometimes their craving to create and innovate would determine whether the work can be completed on time with guaranteed quality and quantity. Therefore, the spirit and behavior of young people which directly associated with the execution of fundamental work have indirectly impact on the running of society, while it is well-known that the decision determining our society’s future often are often response to the abnormal change in politic or economy. That is to say, the young people definitely have influence on the decision of some significant issues of our society, although indirectly and subtly.

Moreover, even though nowadays the young people have little opportunity to join the discussion of key problems of our society, from a long-term learning and review,  through observing or by experiencing, they ultimately would get access to the important position and gain enough power to determine our society’s future. I think we will see as time goes by.

In sum, I cannot entirely agree with the statement, because the young people actually have influence on the significant decisions related to our society’s future, although indirectly and subtly. We should wait for their mature with the hope and pray that some day they could play the leading role in our society.
