Should colleges and universities require students taking more courses before they start working? While taking more courses may broaden students' range of knowledge and benefit students in some specified circumstances, the measure may also impede students from true learning for it obviously neglects the interests and identities of students.

Advocates of more courses probably consider that having a wide range of knowledge will benefit students' career in every case. I concede it when the students are from applied science majors for that today multidisciplinary interaction, such as bio-physics and nano-mechanics, is so common that we can find it in our daily life such as bio-physics and nano-mechanics. Studying more courses will broaden students' horizon and make them tackle their problems from a higher and more comprehensive aspect. Aside from this concession, I can hardly agree with the suggestion of offering more courses to students.

On one side, considering that everyone's time is limited, the more courses you take, the less time you can offer to study each courses. But in some theoretical disciplinaries, mathematics and physics for example, it is wholehearted devotion that distinguish an insightful scientist from amateurs. A proper example comes from the most successful scientist in human history--Einstein. When he was young, he found he had a talent in physics and had a strong interest in studying physics instead other courses. Then, Einstein spent all his time studying physics and resisted taking other courses which are not related to math and physics. Without long devotion to physics, Einstein cannot have insightful comprehension of physics, not to say offering the five world-shaking essays at 1905. Knowledge has two essential characters--depth and breadth. They, however, are often contradictory. It is not wise for universities to improve the breadth of students' knowledge at the price of sacrificing the depth.

On the other side, if the students are required to take more courses, their identities will be undermined. When universities require students taking more courses, the students' own time will inevitably be deprived, as a result they have no time to develop their interest and have to waste their time in the classroom. This measure will transform universities into molds of mind and then lead to that all the graduates' thinking styles are the same and there is no creative mind in the world.

The analysis above makes me realize the significance of defining the purpose of universities education. As far as I concern, the purpose of higher education is help students find their interests and let them shape their own future. Therefore, universities should set courses based on career requirement and let students select courses according to their personal interests. By doing this, students will acquire more time to develop their personal identity and can be a competent citizen instead of a knowledge-storage without individuality.

“It is better to relax by a movie or reading a book than doing physical exercise. Do you agree?”
Are watching movies or reading books more efficient ways to relax than physical exercise? Although a book or a movie does entertain and relax a person in some certain circumstance, I fundamentally disagree that such approaches to relax are better than do physical exercise, for that the claim stated above obviously ignore the benefits of physical exercise and have not been deliberated about the essence of relaxing.

At the beginning of all, I concede that for athletes and manual workers there is no need to spend time and money to get their body exercised in the gym. For them, most of their daily time is spent on building their body, therefore the best way to relax is sitting on a comfortable place and loosen their tensive muscles. In this case reading a book or watching a movie can be the best choices because by these means people need not move their body and at most time thinking in depth will make one's muscles refreshed quicker.

But on the other side, for the people do intellectual work every day, such as university students like us, it is inappropriate to assert that doing physical exercise is inferior than reading regarding relax. Every day, we have to deal with complex calculating and pondering over abstract theorems. In this case, it is crucial to have our brain relaxed. In comparison to reading or watching a movie, doing physical exercise does not need us to do logical thinking, all we should do is following our instinct and tacit understanding between us and our teammates then complete our mission.

Apart from simply relaxing ourselves, doing physical exercise can benefit our health and contribute to our careers in the long terms. When we are doing sports, we build up our muscles and strengthen our body. In today's China, tremendous amount of children suffer from obesity, lacking of exercise is one of the main reason attribute to this tragedy. Not only can sporting be helpful to our physical health, but also it can contribute to our mental health. By participating in team sports, such as football and basketball, we are capable to cooperate with others and recognise the significance of team spirit which is marked as the most decisive ability for a person in the 21th century.

The analysis above makes me recognize the importance of defining what is true relaxing. Relaxing is to refresh our body by resting the part which is in highly tension. Therefore, which is the best way to relax depends on personal job and the need of the body. To sum up, sporting, reading and watching movies both have advantages. Our task is distinguishing which approach is most suited to our body condition and have our body relaxed more efficiently.
