Rather than help their children do school work, parents should encourage their children do work independently. Do you agree or disagree?
As the burden of school work for children is becoming heavier and heavier, more and more parents help their children do school work. Many educators, however, argue that parents should encourage children to complete school assignments independently, rather than help them do this job. Do children have to do work independently without any parents’ help? Admittedly, the ability of independently working is important. Nevertheless, parents’ help, in my point of view, is not less important. Moreover, parents’ help doesn’t contradict independent working. And parents should help their children do school work.
Parents’ help has considerable merits for children, especially those who are not good at school work. At first, the parents’ help is an indispensable source from which children can get help. As an old saying goes, the parent is the first teacher in children’s lives. When child has a difficulty in assignment, the first person comes into his mind is his parent. Without parents’ help, some children even can’t complete the work. Secondly, by helping children do school work, parents can instruct what they have learned to their children, such as how to conduct experiment, survey, and collect materials. As the school work, some of which are projects, is becoming more difficult for children. They do need parents’ help, not only to complete such an assignment, but also to learn these senior abilities. In a word, with the help of parents, not only do children complete school work, but also learn a lot from it.
Besides the merits for children, parents’ help also has significant merits for parents. In fact, offering help to children also provides a medium for instruction, discussion, and communication. If the parents want to help their children, they have to discuss with their children about school work, which in turn helps parents know more about children’s conditions, both physical and psychological. Moreover, through this process, children inherit how their parents think about the world and life. In addition, through the process of working together solving problem, the emotional bond between children and parents is strengthened.
Moreover, parents helping children do school word does not mean children leaving the work to parents. In fact, parents’ help is not opposite to the independent work. Using some pedagogies, parents’ help even can inspire children’s independent idea. When children ask parents about a problem, rather tell them the final answers, parents should inspire them, and teach them how to solve this problem. In this scenario, children still work independently, and learn not the answer to a specific problem, but the method to solve many other similar problems.
To sum up, the parents’ help on children’s school word has significant merits, not only for children, but also for parents. Moreover, parents’ help is not opposite to the independent work. Considering all these aspects, I disagree with the point that parents should not help children do school word.
