Should educators take into account the interests and suggestions of their students on planning courses? I agree with the speaker's reason completely and the claim to a much extent. Although taking into account the interests and suggestions of the students can benefit both the students themselves and society, there are also some limitations concerned with cost, quality, equality and necessity of some courses.
First of all one of the most important aims of education is to develop students’ interests, and courses in accordance with these interests can help to achieve this goal and benefit both the individuals and society. For individuals, as Albert Einstein said, the interest is a best teacher, which can motivate them to perform excellently. In addition, a latest research about learning indicates that when a student concentrated on a problem, in which he or she is interested, his or her cognitive and affective functioning will be motivated and more effective inspirations can be caught. These inspirations may result in some effective and novel solutions. The best example is Einstein himself. He was very interested in the motion of light and often thought about the question:”What will the image of world be like, if I run with light together?”. Although he worked in a Patent Office where no teacher could teach him physics, motivated by the strong interest, he studied the electromagnetic field theory and, during this period, many unique inspirations came out. By means of innovative arrangement and thinking about those inspirations, he proposed the relativity theory finally. Therefore the courses, as a main part of the education, should be designed according to students’ interests and suggestions.
Additionally, for society, it is desirable for it that every citizen can exert his or her advantages to contribute to it better. Only by educating them according to their interests, their advantages can be developed to the maximum extent.
However, the cost of considering every student’s interest and suggestion is prohibitively high, and the difficulty involved in ensuring the quality and equality is insurmountable. If educators take into account all interests the students, tremendous courses should be introduced into the class, as are many professional teachers, which need a large amount of money. What's worse, the time occupied by each course will be reduced, so even, students can’t master the basic knowledge and skills and become dilettantes. Because of the different courses, students could not be measured in a common criterion, so it is difficult for educators to appraise their learning quality, which leads to inequality.
Finally, some courses such as language, mathematics and history, must be introduced for all no matter they like or dislike, because these courses are necessary for their future. Can you image a musician without enough ability of expression or a physicist without enough ability of logic analysis?
From the analysis above, although courses planned according to students’ interests and suggestions have many benefits, on balance, the educators should also take account of the limitation of resources and the necessity of some required courses, and then make a compromise.
