We can take Hong Kong government, which is regarded as one of the best governments in the world, as an example. How does Hong Kong gain such renown? It is because in addition to different governmental agencies, the reporters can catch the sight of any official’s malpractice, no matter at work or in daily life. So that when scandals are exposed and spread, officials will be questioned by not only parliament, but also the public right away, just like Henry Tang, who was one of the candidates for chief governor and failed eventually owing to a constantly declining support rate resulted from his illegally transforming the structure of his house. Therefore, through this kind of scandals, we cannot deny the fact that scandals can play a significant role in regulating government’s as well as people’s activities.
  However, not all the scandals possess positive effect on the society as I have mentioned above. As the issue says that scandals can concentrate people’s attention on problems in ways that no one ever could, scandals, especially the scandals of some celebrities, can attract the attention of public. Thus, many media make use of this characteristic and work hard to dig out the most fascinating privacy of those celebrities. Owing to the drastic competition between each medium, some people, who can be called as paparazzo, even use some illegal methods to quest. For instance, we have heard about the news that last winter some Hollywood actresses’ cell phones were broken in by hackers and their nude photos were exposed on the internet. This kind of scandals seriously violates people’s privacy and disturbs the life of them, just imagining that there are always a crowd of people with cameras around you who expect to take some pictures of your ungenteel behaviors. Thus, we can see how scandals negatively affect the society.
  In the mean time, as a result of this inestimable attraction, scandal seems to deprive the society of its flimsy harmony. Saboteurs fabricate canards to induce an implacable hatred towards government. Competitors utilize fake scandals to defame their rivals. Movie makers as well as singers use scandals to publicize their opuses. Well-known people take advantage of scandals to libel those whose opinion is opposite to their own. All these scenes can exemplify a lack of ethos in the contemporary society, due to the impact of scandals.
  All in all, although scandals are indeed attractive, we cannot regard it as something of great use because of its double-edged characteristic.
