[Issue 51]

Young people should be encouraged to pursue long-term, realistic goals rather than seek immediate fame and recognition. [Specific Task Instruction: Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.]

--------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------

Should young people be encouraged to pursue long-term, realistic goals rather than seek immediate fame and recognition, as the speaker claims? I fundamentally agree with this statement, because long-term and realistic goal could guide the young people in correct direction to success, while seeking immediate fame and recognition usually lead to activism and final failure. Nevertheless, sometimes, it is useful to divide a long-term goal into several immediate ones for realizing it.

-----------------------------------------

First of all, seeking immediate fame and recognition usually leads to activism and final failure, while a long-term goal would let people concentrate on realizing it in a correct way. In today's society, the massive media are full of stories of successful bold youngsters. Consequently, the immediate success is becoming more and more inviting for adolescents. To earn the fame and recognition, they would probably forget their principles and final objectives and do something immoral, even illegal. For example, Jan Hendrik Schon, a German physicist, to seek the immediate fame and recognition, he forged experimental data, published many papers in prominent scientific publications at the speed of one paper per eight days in 2011! He rose to prominence after a series of apparent breakthroughs with semiconductors that were later discovered to be fraudulent. After exposed, he became notorious, and then was deprived of active right to apply for funds of German Research Foundation. The eager for quick success and instant benefit results in that his academic dream crumbled forever.

-----------------------------------------

Secondly, long-term goal could foster many characteristics such as perseverance, sedulity and patience, which are all crucial to success. For instance, Bill Gates entered Harvard in 1973 meaning that when he graduated, a well earning job would await him. However, because he noticed PC's rapid development in the future, according to long views, he dropped off two years later and then started the engine of Microsoft with Allen. From then on, he devoted himself to the development of many software and during that period, the huge project and convoluted codes let him to be more and more persistent, sedulous and patient. As a result, his team successfully developed many excellent software including the most famous MS-DOS and Windows operating systems. Microsoft dominated the PC market, and now it has become the biggest software company.

-----------------------------------------

Nevertheless, division the long-term goal into several immediate goals can usually contribute to realization. Because that a long-term goal seems too far to reach directly, an immediate goal might motivate a person to reach more effectively. When a person reaches one goal, he or she will have a sense of accomplishment and becomes more willing to finish the next one, so the long-term goal can be realized step by step easily.

-----------------------------------------

In sum, pursuing long-term, realistic goals rather than immediate fame is more beneficial. Young people should divide a long-term into several parts to reach step by step.

The definition of activism from M-W dictionary:
: a doctrine or practice that emphasizes direct vig ...
