To be successful in a job or a study, having the ability to adapt to changing conditions or circumstances is more important than having excellent knowledge in the job or the field of study.

As the pace of our society becomes faster and faster, the ability to adapt to the changing environment is highly valued. When the condition changes, people are required to accommodate to the now environment as soon as possible so that they can work well and catch up with others. As a result, there is a problem come on the heel of this situation: Is the ability to adapt to new environment more important than the excellent knowledge in the job or the field of study? From my perspective, the answer depends on different situations.

In the business world, the ability of adaptation might be critical to the success than the excellent knowledge. Admittedly, a good knowledge of his or her area is instrumental to people’s work, but in the business field, if you cannot keep pace with the new situation, you might be lagged behind even become a loser. In my hometown, there was a renowned company which used to be the leading enterprise in its industry in our province. Unfortunately, in 1990s, when a big change took place in its field and other companies did a lot to adapt to the new environment, this company just sticked to its old fashion and took no action to change. It turned out that the company was exceeded by others soon and eventually it broke down. It is clearly, if a company refuses to change, it is doomed to fail. Therefore, the field, such as business which changes a lot, values ability to adapt to new environment more.

For other fields which don’t have too many changes, the knowledge is the biggest factor behind the success. Take education as an example. It is true that there are some changes in the education circle and every year schools will spend a lot of money on training its staff in order to increase the teaching quality and research ability. However, compared with business, a teacher’s rich knowledge plays a more important role in teaching. I have met a teacher who is kind of a stubborn person and when every year the school releases some new policies about teachers, he just ignores it, but he still enjoys a high reputation in my school because he has an excellent knowledge in his fields. He has a lot of fruitful research achievement and teaches very well. Both students and teachers respect him and there is no doubt that he is a successful teacher.

On the one hand, It is true that with the development of our society, we have to speed our pace to catch up others and to adjust ourselves to the new environment as soon as possible to avoid we are weeded out in the competition. On the other hand, the success still needs us to equip ourselves with knowledge of our expertise. Both the ability to adapt and rich knowledge serve as an instrumental part of success and we should pay attention to both aspects.
