9.28 When a new technological devices become available. Some people buy it right away, while others will wait until many have acquired it. Which view do you agree with and explain why.


As science is evolving so rapidly, how should people adopt new technology becomes an interesting topic to discuss. As for innovation adoption, I prefer to be a “laggard” person because of the concerns of uncertain risks of new products, expensive prices, and social sanctions.

To begin with, new technological products may contain potential deficiencies or risks. Because the public is so hunger to revolutionary products, many of them flood into the market before being fully tested. Under this circumstance, the safety or the quality of new technological products is open to doubt. For example, just after the iphone 5 is sold, Apple received a bunch of complaint cases regarding the problem of the electronic wire within the cell phone. If I were the pioneering customer, I would be struggled about the repair of my new iphone. Hence, I would rather be a “late” consumer waiting to purchase the product when all the bugs are fixed.

Second, the expense of purchasing a state-of-art device can be extremely high. When new tech devices are introduced in the market, they are usually supplied limitedly. As rare means expensive, the innovative product can only afforded by wealthy people. However, as time flies by and more people acquire the product, the factory will expand its production. Take personal computer (PC) as an example. When PC was first put into the market in the 1990s, its average price was more than 1500 dollars in China. However, when PC has been an essentiality for every people, its average price drops to 700 dollars. Therefore, for the purpose of save money, I will purchase a new technological product when it is not that “new”.

Last but not least, it is embarrassing to use a new technological device when people around you are not familiar with it. Because humans are social animals, we are subject to social norms more or less. The rule of social norm indicates people conform to the group or they will be rejected. Hence, if an individual purchase a newly-released device, his/her uniqueness may be envied, doubted, and even hated. Therefore, to better adjust to the social environment, I would better follow the trend to purchase new products.

In a summary, even though trying new technology devices in an early stage may be tempting, I will be the person purchase them when a mature market has formed. To buy a technology device when the majority has already adopted means not only less risks, lower price, but indeed a better fit into interpersonal relationship.

There is an old saying that interest is students’ best teacher. However, the way to induce[Cultivate is a better choice.] interests is an open discussion topic. Although convincing students the application[Practical is better] value of a subject can be a possible answer to this discussion, this approach may not be the best one.

To begin with, the statement suffers from a logical problem. It relies on the assumption that every subject has values in the practical world. However, it may not be the case. Some subjects are more closely related to the daily life, like financial[Finance is the right word], advertising, and engineering, while others mainly deals[删去s] with theoretical constructs[Field is better], explains abstract social structure, or observes untouchable phenomenon and thus are weak in application. For example, it is difficult to find out how classical literature can be directly utilized in the professional world. If one assumes that informing application value is the best way to encourage interest, it is almost impossible for classical literature professors to induce students’ enthusiasm. Hence, this idea can be attacked for its false assumption.

Second, there are other equally appealing approaches that [Add “can”]increase students’ interests. One of these alternatives can be mere exposure to the knowledge of a certain subject. Psychology literatures[Study is better] reveal that there is a positive relationship between the number of mere exposure and people’s attitude toward[Add “s”] a subject. Take one of professor as an example. Her academic interest is small group communication and she attributes this interest to her undergraduate research experience with another professor in this area. Hence[Take ”Thus” instead of “Hence” in case of repetition.], for some people like her, the best interest driver is their exposure experience or something else instead of knowing the significance of a subject outside of the academic world.[This sentence is not coherent to the topic sentence of this paragraph. ]

Last but not least, realizing the practical value of a subject doesn’t guarantee people’s[Students’, I suppose] interest in this area. Other factors, such as the perceived learning difficulty[Perceived learning disability is the right academic phrase.], may also impact interest formation. For example, even though I understand that math plays a huge role in our economic life, I am not at all attracted to this subject because I feel I am not good at calculating. In my case, merely knowing the application significance fails to drive my interest to certain disciplines.

In summary, it is too hastily to conclude that only teaching the practical value of a subject is the most optimal way to stimulate interests. Perhaps, sometimes a subject just does’t have any practical significance; or perhaps some people have their own interest driver and thus recognizing the application value should not be regarded as a global rule to elicit interests; or even perhaps, knowing means nothing.
