Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: People can learn more from watching television than by reading books. (Leisure)
In this day and age, individuals have great access to television including to dramas, movies, talk shows and even news, which undoubtedly provide a large amount of information and knowledge. While comparing with books, in most cases, the later reveals a superiority like much more systematic, offering a deeper horizon towards the topic and time saving.
In the first case, a book makes the knowledge in a field presented in a frame that is systematically and logically developed with the catalogue. For example, I'm major in food science and usually occupied with the information about the chemical elements of the food materials, though sometimes I will watch a section of science TV drama to learn a little about my research, it doesn't work a lot and if fortunately enough, I could only pick up some but who knows whether it will be forgot after turning off the TV. In such aspects. however, a book aimed at my subject will help me absolutely, since carefully reading the articles arranged as the learning order will keep in mind significantly.
Apart from learning in a book in order, reading a book naturally offer a deeper information than from TV shows, substantially due to the limitation of which, to name just a few, not only a talk show has to cater to everyone's recognition but a drama must cut down part of indispensable mental activities as well as, what's more, the millions of advertising has nothing on our literacy advancement but will mislead us like taking pills to lose weight and so on.
Last but not least, it takes less time to read a book then watching TV. As to me, the TV dramas is the best case in point, several days ago, I was gravitated by a romantic novel, then I spent only 2 hours to finish it sharply. Luckily enough, the novel is filmed as a TV drama which surprisingly covered 40 sections, maybe even 20 hours I could not watch the ending of it. What a pity! They are telling the same story but only the format differs from each other, the time people spend differs amazingly.
However, watching TV brings about more satisfaction and leisure during the enjoyable process, which may comfort people, like children and the old have less desire for information compared with the young. All in all, if one is eager for learning more, it's a intelligent selection to read books instead watching TV. |
